This is what I know about the Carroll/Shipes family connection in Barnwell County, SC
There was a Benjamin Carroll born in Barnwell County ca.1830. He married Elizabeth Shipes,
the daughter of Jacob Shipes. This Benjamin Shipes was probably the Benjamin Shipes that
deserted from the Palmetto Regiment during the War of 1848. When last known (by me) he was
living in Cheraw, SC.
There is another (older) Benjamin Carroll (relationship unknown) who appears on early
membership rolls of Double Pond Baptist Church in Barnwell. I strongly suspect this is
Benjamin's father. These documents are on the Double Pond website.
My gggrandmother was Ann Carroll. She was the "reputed wife" of Darling Shipes,
Elizabeth Shipes younger brother. I have never been able to trace her line and hope that
you may have some information that will be useful.(I have often suspected she was a sister
or niece of Benjamin)
There were four Carroll families in Barnwell County n 1850. Two were caucasian and the
lines have been well documented. Most of these went to Alabama/Florida after 1850. The
other two are less clear.
I can provide more information if needed
