It has been quite a while since I posted my Carroll "brick wall" information.
Since there has been quite a bit of activity on this list recently, I thought I would toss
it out again.
I am sure of everything between the **'s:
**
My grandmother was Anna CARROLL,
b. 3 May, 1866, Cannelton, Perry Co., Indiana
d. 28 Feb. 1952, Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., Indiana
buried: Sunset Hill Cem., Rockport, Spencer Co., Indiana
married, 29 May 1906, Perry Co., Indiana:
George T. GIBBS,
b. 8 Feb., 1885, Perry Co., Indiana
d. 8 Oct., 1948, Spencer Co., Indiana
buried: Sunset Hill Cem., Rockport, Spencer Co., Indiana
Anna CARROLL'S father was William CARROLL. William d. 21 Jan., 1889, Cannelton, Perry
Co., Indiana. He is buried in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Cannelton, Perry Co.,
Indiana.
William CARROLL,
b. 1837 [Perry Co. Obituary: age 52];
1843 [Tombstone inscription];
1846 [Perry Co. Death Record: Age 43]
d. 21 Jan 1889 [Tombstone inscribed 1888]
[Perry Co. Obit., Newspaper dated 1/26/1889 Obit. states .."buried from
St. Patrick's Church on Wednesday last". He leaves a wife and three
children].

I have weak proof that William CARROLL was b. Co. Tipperary, Ireland. His wife and
children certainly thought he was born in Ireland. William married Anna MINTON/MINTER,
probably around 1870, possibly in Hardin Co., KY. I have not found proof of their
marriage. I have not found William in any Census. I do not find Anna in a Census until
1900.
Baptism records for St. Clare Church in Hardin Co., KY have an entry for:
James Dionisius CARROLL, s/o William CARROLL & Anna Jane MENTON, born 27 Oct. 1874,
Spon. Mrs. Mary E. Ryan, bapt. 6 Dec 1874. I have found nothing further for James
Dionisius.
Two more children were born, probably in Hardin Co., KY:
Maggie, b. 1876 and Joseph, b. 1878. I have marriage & death information for both of
them, and children for Maggie. Joseph did not have any children.
The family of William and Anna CARROLL with children (at the very least Maggie &
Joseph and possibly James) should be somewhere in an 1880 Census but I have not been able
to find them in Hardin Co., KY or anywhere.
Two more children were born in Perry Co., IN. My grandmother, Anna (see details above)
and Patrick (b. Sep 1890), whose birth is of questionable biological connection to
William; his recorded birthdate is 9 months past the death of William Carroll - I have
not resolved this yet. I have marriage and children information for him.
Anna (Minton) CARROLL (surname indexed as CANOLL on
Ancestry.com) is found in the 1900
Perry Co., IN Census with 4 children: Maggie, Joseph W., Anna and Patrick CARROLL; Ann
states 6 children born, 4 children living. Father's birthplace for the children is
Ireland.
The only document that I have found that gives William CARROLL'S birthplace as Co.
Tipperary is the marriage record of my grandparents [George GIBBS & Anna CARROLL]
where Anna [dau.of Wm & Anna (Minton) CARROLL] states father was born Co.
Tipperarie(sic), Ireland.
William's death record states his nationality as Ireland/Irish.
Because of the discrepancy in his birth year and the very common name of 'William
Carroll', I have not even tried to find immigration information. It just seems
futile.
Thank you to anyone who stuck with it all the way to the bottom of my post. Any help,
advice or questions are welcome.
