Jim,
There seem to be several NC lines. A line of John W. Carroll who moved from Northern Sampson County and a line of James Carroll from Orange County, NC have DNA tests that are different from the large group from Southern Sampson/Duplin County, NC. There were also some early Carrolls in Rockingham, Johnston, Bertie, and Wilkes Counties... and probably others. I don't know if they have DNA tests or not.
I should soon have the results of my daughter's Family Finder test. It will be three generations later than our family's Carroll Y-DNA test, so I don't know what to expect it to show. I'm not able to keep up with all the research now.

Thanks for the feedback. I have two matches with the atDNA Family Finder test who claim the NC CARROLLs (is it only one line?) and we investigated if our Common Ancestor was a CARROLL. At that time I couldn't connect the VA and NC lines.

Jim,
I don't know if Dempsey was a surname at one point in time. I have seen the given name in other Irish families. There aren't as many with that given name as John, James, etc. The DNA thus far seems to indicate no male line between the VA and the NC Dempsey Carrolls. It would be good if you could get 3 tests from your VA line to eliminate the possiblity of adoptions, etc. The NC group has a pretty well established Haplotype.

Is Dempsey a common given name for different CARROLL lines? I had thought it was from a Matriarch's surname of one line. I descend from the CARROLLs in Fauquier Co, VA during the RevWar. We are trying to get Y-DNA from a second descendant of that line.

Toni,
I just came across your post. I am not able to research actively right now, but I did want to call your attention to the fact that I think you have two CARROLL family lines mixed. The Dempsey Carroll who married Mary Hall in VA and the one who married Mary Polly Kirtley and lived in KY are not part of the family in Duplin/Sampson County, NC which moved south to SC, AL, and FL. This Dempsey (son of Dempsey in NC and brother of Alexander and Stephen) was in the Rev. War.

I am trying to put together Agnes (Folliard) Carroll [from Chatham/Savannah, b.1875-d.1947] and Michael J Carroll [Canadian immigrant, b.1860-d.1906]. Both were likely married prior to this marriage. Agnes, possibly to another Carroll.
Michael & family were plasterers who moved to St. Louis around 1900, the year the two were married.
Michael would be my Great Grandfather. Any info would be helpful.

I am trying to locate my grandfather's family which came from Canada to the US. There is a supposed connection to the family of Rev. Francis Patrick Carroll, Bishop of Calgary, Alberta. The family came to the US near the turn of the century (1900), part of which ended up settling in the St. Louis, Missouri area. They were in the plaster business and had some role in preparation for the 1904 Worlds Fair.
If you have any information that might be helpful, I would appreciate hearing more about it.

Saw your post on Ancestry... Henry C. Carroll was my husband's 3rd Great Grandfather who had a brick making business with his sons on Haverford Avenue between 58th and 60th. Is he an ancestor of your Henry?
There is a Carroll Park now I believe in what was once part of the brick yard. Today it is a very run down part of Philadelphia. I'm looking for photos of it in the day.
