This is all he told me - I can check with him and see what test he used:
"I did my DNA a year or so ago. I have 18% native american. It is mitochondrial so it came from my mother. It only follows the female line down to a male then it stops. Florence' mother must have had a large % of native american."
This was done Dec. 2009.

Do you have any info yet in your line to work from? I have my Carrolls and ancillary lines pretty well documented in southeastern KY and eastern TN.

What test did your uncle use that determined that he is 18% Native American? Which company processed the test? Family stories and appearance tell us there is Native American heritage in my husband's family, but I have been unable to pin-point the first Native American to come into the family.
My son took the Y-DNA67 test with FamilyTreeDNA, but of course that provides only a description of the paternal lineage - not the total ancestry. (That was not a CARROLL test.) I have wondered if another company might help. I don't believe even a mtDNA test would do that.

The only information we have is Earl Clyde Carroll was a drifter from a young age. In 1920 he is living with a Moon family: Census Microfilm Records: Pennsylvania,
Birthplace: TENNESSEE
Vendego Co. Cornplanter twp, PA
Charles B. Moon 52
Elizabeth 52
Orville 22 (Adopted son died 1932, hit by a car, No issue)
E. C. Carroll 18 Laborer Barrell Factory TN TN TN
NOTE: EC Earl Clyde Carroll and his parents are all listed as being born in TN.
This matching the story he told his wife that he was taken in my a family in that part of Pennsylvania.
The only other paper trail we have found is his marriage licenses. He listed he was born TN on Jan 21, 1902 but the census would make it 1902. He may have lied about his age on his marriage lic because his wife's family thought he was to old for her.
He listed his parents as David or Daniel Anderson Carroll born in TN and mother Gretta May Ellsworth born in TN. I don't think he knew his parents well and may have been orphaned and drifted from a young age. But circa 1950-1970 someone seen in a coal miners newsletter that someone posted an ad from TN or KY looking for him. By that time he had died. His wife never knew his family to contact them about his death in 1938. I never found a Gretta May Ellsworth Carroll in TN. He also had a nickname as the Big Indian. I am not sure if he was part native american or not. If so it may have been his mothers side or one of his grandmothers. Also I am not sure Ellsworth was spelled correctly. He was an outlaw, so to speak. Maybe the blacksheep in the family.

Copy this web site and it will show you the 1900 Jellico Campbell Co. Census for James born March 1875.
I think James is probably a brother or cousin of Nan Carroll, she was born 1876

I think the reason Nan Carroll is hard to find is that she was part of full native american. This is what I have been told and that's the big reason I'm search for her.

Hello,
I just posted a message about Roger Carroll ( Carrell ) who left a Will in Henrico/Goochland County, Virginia in 1727 and then I saw your message. Goochland County, Virginia was founded in 1728 from Henrico.
My Carter family with the connection to the Carroll family moved from Goochland County, Virginia to the Nutbush Creek area in the mid-1700's.
There were also several marriages between my Carter family and the Johnson family. It has been a struggle to get them straight but I think they are like this:
1 Daniel Johnson
Mary Hailey
2 John (Sr.) Johnson b: ~1756 d: 1793
Elizabeth Carter d: ~1820
2 Michael Hailey Johnson b: ~1759
Sally Carter
2 Deborah Johnson
Thomas (Jr.) Stevens d: 12 Jan 1795
I am also researching the Stevens family. I have a database on RootsWeb.

Message Board Post:
Seeking information on the Roger Carroll ( Carrell ) who left a Will in Henrico/Goochland County, Virginia in 1727. Goochland County, Virginia was founded in 1728 from Henrico.
In his Will he referenced his wife Elizabeth and four sons:
- William Carroll
- John Carroll
- Roger Carroll
- Stewart Carroll
Elizabeth may or may not have been the mother of his children.
In his Will, Roger Carroll also referenced a "son" Thomas Carter. This "son" was probably his son-in-law. This Thomas Carter was probably Thomas Carter, Junior (a son of Thomas Carter, Senior who left a Will in Goochland County, Virginia in 1738).
In his own Will written 1760, Thomas Carter, Junior referenced his wife Mary. This Mary may or may not have been the mother of his children and she may or may not have been a daughter of Roger Carroll.
Some researchers have considered that the daughter of Roger Carroll was the Penele ( ?? Penelope ) who was referenced by Thomas Carter, Senior as his wife in his 1738 Will but I don't think this is correct.
Thomas Carter, Junior named a son Baynes "Banes" Carter. I'm wondering if the Baynes name could have come from his wife's Carroll family.
There is also this information:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/carter/messages/19575.html
"On 1 May 1706 a patent for 570 acres of land in Henrico County was granted to Richard Cock, Junior. Two of the head rights mentioned in this patent were Roger Carrell and Hanna Carrell."
-- Dan Wallace, January 21, 2009
I don't know how Hanna ( ?? Hannah ) Carrell was related to Roger Carrell.
Roger Carroll may have been an ancestor of the William Carroll who married Nancy Strong in Goochland County, Virginia in 1781. It has been reported that William & Nancy had the following children born in Goochland County, Virginia:
- Polly Carroll
- Jesse Carroll
- Nancy Carroll
I hope there is a Carroll family researcher out there who can help answer some of these mysteries.

Hi, do you have any information on a Nan or Nannie Carrol? She would have been born about 1876, she married Hilery Branam/Branham and they are from around Jellico, TN. My greatgrandmother was Florence Branam, their daughter, she was born 1893, she married Sil Bowlin, Florence died 1960.
I'm trying to find out Nan's parents.
Thanks

I continue to look for my CARROLL ancestors from Ireland who settled in
in Rhode Island in the early 1840's.
Elizabeth CARROLL, daughter of Sarah ? and John CARROLL, was born circa
1813 - 1820 in Ireland, and married Bernard McElroy in 1847 in Providence,
RI. She died in 1900 at 121 Pettis Street in North Providence, RI.
Of her 8 children, four girls survived childhood: Isabella (married
Edward TAGUE (aka MONTAGUE)), Sarah (marriedTerrance KANE), Mary Alice
(remained single), and Elizabeth (married John J. O'Donnell).
Any information would be welcome. Thank you.
