Hi,
I noticed your very old post regarding Anthony O'Carroll of Ireland. I just recently was moving into researching my family's connection with the O'Carroll family. It goes pretty far back to Joanna (JoHanna) O'Carroll who married Joshua Howard of Baltimore, Maryland. There is now pretty good evidence and documentation that Joanna was one of the three daughters that Anthony O'Carroll also had in addition to his four sons. So she would be the niece of the first Charles O'Carroll who came to Baltimore. As Anthony & Charles were brother's and Daniel was their father.
I just always found it hard to believe that none of these guys had any daughters. Someone finally rooted them out.
Lets connect this family.

Sad that Downing's website is no longer up as it provided an extensive list of individuals descending from John and Joseph Carroll. Those who don't have this lineage might contact him at bgandy007(a)aol.com. As with many Ulster/Scotts Joseph came to America in the mid - 1730's residing for a while in Chester Co PA then he and family followed the Catawba Trail settling in the border area of now NC and SC near York. Thomas Carroll says that John inherited land from his father John as a result from his participation in the Battle of the Boyne. There is no documentation of this and I rather doubt it occurred. Joseph and family settled on Fishing Creek and was said to have a two story log cabin. I have a DAR booklet written 50 years after the "Battle of Huck's Defeat" showing that Joseph's son John rather than Samuel was responsible for killing Captain Huck during the Rev. I to have many of the early Carroll wills along with info regarding there land.

Thank you for your insight into my problem. I appreciate it.
Do you know anything of a Joseph CARRELL who is the son of Jacob CARRELL of Richland District, SC? I have the will of Stephen HUGG in which he leaves a watch to Jacob CARRELL who is married to Nancy HUGG, Stephen HUGG's daughter. Stephen HUGG is also the father of William J HUGG who married Martha CARROLL b.
1815 SC(who I am trying to find parents for). Nancy & William are brother and sister.

I don't necessarily care whether our Carrell/Carroll family descended from nobility, I mostly would just like to discover who are the parents of my Martha CARROLL who married William J Hugg. Maybe if I quit on this family for awhile and come back to it later, because it is really starting to get frustrating. This sometimes is an enjoyable endeavor, but sometimes not.
Sometimes it doesn't help my blood pressure.

True and you did say there was a younger son named Elias.
However I have seen Joseph Elias Carroll, Jr. which confuses those who think that the father must be Joseph Elias Carroll as well which is not mandatory.
Two other possibilities and still we have a man sure his name should be Joseph Elias Carroll, Jr.:
(1) His father is Joseph Carroll, nothing more.
(2) His father is Joseph Elzebub Carroll or
Joseph Eloysius (a variant of the other one) Carroll or
Joseph Eliakim Carroll and so forth;
where in (2) there was a desire to change to a less weird middle name but still be one of Biblical appearance and (1) where the son's descendants, and possibly the son himself, saw him as his father's namesake, which indeed was, and thus Junior was used where some thought it required a complete match, and it does not truly so require at least as done in practice.
On the other matter, it will be hard to document completely any claim to nobility here, but we Wylies have the same for our American matriarch, being a disinherited daughter of rich nobility for marrying a physician Covenanter or whatever, which has yet to be even personified with her father's name, much less full documentation.
"As yet undocumented family lore" or similar honest honorable phrase is the best way to keep it, not dismiss it, but not be a shill to something that just is not yet known.

Since last posting, I have found new information on the daughter of Joseph Carroll & Isabella HENRY, that says she married a man by name of WOODS & was still having children
with the man by last name of Woods after my Martha married William J HUGG. My Martha was born 1815 to a Joseph CARROLL/CARRELL. I do find that there is a Joseph CARRELL who is a son of a Jacob CARRELL, Richland District. There is a Joseph CARRELL who lived in Richland District who later is in York Co,SC. I have seen an article in the South Carolina Ancestral Magazine that has the marriage of the daughter of Joseph CARROLL to William J HUGG. I was going to bookmark that page & when I went back to do it, I couldn't find that
volume or page. Does anyone know of this.

And though you may not have realized it in the last post, you further deprecated the claim that Joseph husband of Isabella Henry & son of Joseph and Martha Swansey/Swansea/Swance, had the middle name Elias. Here Elias Lewellen Carroll, was given Elias as the first name.
Often sons are considered a Junior with a middle name and their father had no or a slightly different middle name, including my father at times with his father.
I would have been extraordinarily rare to reuse a non-family name a second time in first or middle position, where the first sibling born with it survived.
Every occasion an American family claims nobility red flag and every occasion an American family claims middle names where the other siblings have none, red flag. Here all the siblings are listed with middle names at least now.
So keep researching and avoid absolute statements. Get original documents and photos or copies of them to prove some part of your case. No matter what such a document says you still must prove identity of your guy is the same as that of the person reference.

I have seen some info that says a Joseph Elias CARROLL married Isabella HENRY. Then others that say that Martha SWANCEY/SWANSEA's husband was Joseph Elias CARROLL. The only time I have seen the name Elias is in the will of Joseph CARRELL/CARROLL m. to Martha SWANSEA in which he leaves a
Sorrel horse, bridle, saddle & some land to his son Joseph, and to his three youngest children...Elias, Marsha and Isabell he leaves Will's price after he has been sold to be divided equally among the three youngest.

The information about Mary House who marries a Thomas Carrell, unfortunately, has been so misquoted that it is really muddled right now. A good source for this line is John A Brayton's book, "Colonial Families of surry and Isle of Wight Counties, Virginia , Vol 2: the descendants of Robert Harris. In his book he explains how difficult it is to follow the Carrell (Carroll) descendants as there were several brothers all with similar names. However. in 1704 it was necessary for Mary Carrell to prove she was the daughter of a John Spiltimber; in the documents recorded, it was proven she was born ca. 1684, so it is doubtful she marries a Thomas Carrell who was born in 1704. These Carrells are my ancestors and I have done quite a bit of research on them. You can contact me directly at tomaci(a)verizon.net if you would like more information on them

Hi Carroll researchers.
We have just returned from a trip to John Day, Grant co., Oregon.
While there we went to the next little town, Canyon City, to tour the
Grant County Historical Museum.
While there on the wall, was a large picture of a very pretty lady.
NORENE CARROLL - 1914 - Actress.
Does anyone know who she was, I have not been able to find anything on her,
as to if that was her maiden name or married name.
Just wonder if she is might be one of your relatives?
Jackie Purdy, Shingle Springs, CA.
Descendant of Jesse Carroll & Mary Rachel Gavin, Sampson/Duplin co.NC.

Look at the very far right side of the colored graph. The time period shown at the top as "1625 to 1659" has three ancestors shown. None are in the "1600 to 1625" time period.
There are probably two dozen other lines that are not part of one of those three Carroll families.
