I just got a book (fiction) written by Lynette Eason. Her paternal grandparents are Lewis Carroll,Sr. and Kate Bexley Barker. She list this in her dediaction. She also lists her email as www.lynetteeason.com. She states she is often on line at this address. Maybe this can help. She uses the Carolina coasts as the back ground for her book. I am a decendant of William Henderson Carroll.
I will be out of the office starting 12/09/2008 and will not return until

Her father's, her brother's, or her name phonetically like it is shown. But
thank you, and don't let anyone tell you that my father was an O'Carroll
from Ely. He was a McCarroll from Ulster. (Sometimes shown as McCarville.)

My Carroll's are spelled, Carol,Karel, Kurl,Carrell,Carel, and Carrell. I
try to figure out what area they were from so the pronunciation may reflect
what area they resided.
I always look at every possible spelling. Don't know if this is any help or
not. Good hunting!

I have run into a problem that perhaps you could help me with. Margaret
"WHONOHAN" was in our line and it is a mystery to me how she and her
name should be displayed.
It is about somebody from my maternal side of the family.
Michael GAGHAN married Margaret WHONHAN (a possible variant of Hounihan)
sometime around 1854 to 1855, and they immigrated to the states in 1855.
She
was born about 1830, probably around the civil parish of Donaghmore, County
Cork, Ireland, and died May 1, 1901 in Fond du lac County, Wisconsin. (The
surname is possibly "Hounihan" or "Hounahan"; there were
approximately 717 persons by that surname in Ireland in 1890, virtually all
in
County Cork.)
I found her, but her name was given as "WHO - NO - HAN." It could be
a phonetic spelling, but the thing is when I went to Ireland they said there
was
no WHO - and told me to look up Hounihan. This becomes more complicated
because
John, the father, is displayed differently on family trees posted to the
internet, and then Margaret's siblings are all over the map.
Spelling wasn't a strong suit, and especially when there might be a problem
reading and writing as the case may be with Irish farmers. So, how do I do
it?
Margaret's father was John HOUNAHAN, b: in County Cork, Ireland. According
to WorldConnect, his residence in Ireland included: 1835: Baracharing
townland;
in 1837, 1840: Derry townland, and in 1842 Droumduff, Co. Cork, Ireland.
However, there appears to be no such townlands - other than Derry - when
looking
for them in County Cork. He married Honora "Nora" Carroll, who was
also born in County Cork, Ireland on November 27, 1824, in the civil parish
of
Coachford, Co. Cork, Ireland, according to a letter from Martina Aherne,
Mallow
Heritage Centre, Mallow, Co. Cork, Ireland, addressed to Steven Dhuey (May
16,
2000). Their children included:
William Hounahan, b: November 14, 1825;
Twins, John and Ann Hounahan, b: September 27, 1827;
Jane Hounahan, b: January 5, 1829;
John Hounahon, b: December 1835;
Robert Hounehan, b: October 14, 1837
Patrick Huonihan, b: March 20, 1840;
Marianne Hoonihan, b: July 21, 1947; and
Margaret Whonohan, b: September 30, 1830.
Regards and Thank you,
Jim Carroll

Thank you for your response, Amanda. I think that CARROLL is a pretty common Irish surname. The earliest census in which I found my wife's ancestor, Michael CARROLL, was the 1861 census for Bottom Row, Newchurch, Lancashire. They probably lived in the basement of a row house in a very impoverished setting. Michael's surname was spelled CARL in his 1856 marriage record. I also found a Catherine CARROLL whose name was also spelled CARL in her 1855 marriage record. Both marriage certificates showed the father as John CARROLL, deceased. I presume that "CARL" was the registrar's spelling of how they pronounced their surnames. It was this information that led me to hypothesize that Michael and Catherine were brother and sister. I do not know if they had any other siblings who immigrated to Lancashire. I have also assumed that Sarah CARROLL, who was shown as a general servant in the household of Catherine (Carroll) and James FADDEN, was the mother of Michael and Catherine!
. Sarah's death certificate shows that she died in Bottoms Row, Stacksteads, with Michael CARROLL present at the death, and she was the widow of John CARROLL, a farmer. Michael CARROLL, son of John, named his second child, Sarah. Winifred (Fadden) CONNOLLY, daughter of Catherine (Carroll) FADDEN, named her first child, Sarah. This additional information strengthened my hypothesis that Michael and Catherine were brother and sister and that they were children of John and Sarah CARROLL. I have no idea about Sarah CARROLL's maiden name. I suspect that John CARROLL died in Ireland, but it is possible that he also immigrated to Lancashire and died shortly thereafter so that he was never enumerated in a census. I have no clue as to the county and/or parish in Ireland from which they immigrated.
Do you think there is any possibility that your Mary CARROLL might be related? Michael CARROLL, born abt. 1836 in Ireland, had a daughter named Mary, who was born abt. 1857, but she married in 1877 to John BURKE.

I too am researching the CARROLL family, but it was my grandmother Mary Carroll, who we understand came over from Ireland and settled in Lancashire. She married a Hargreaves in Lancashire and had (4) children in the early 1900s,and she was catholic.
Only difference being is that we have her birth date of approx 1866.
