I am working on my husband's family. Jackson Carroll and Nancy Stewart would be his g-g-g-grandparents.
What I know:
Jackson Cantrell, born 16 Jul 1816 in SC; died 1870 probably in GA.
Marriage date unknown.
Nancy Stewart, born 17 Mar 1821 in Alabama; died 1 Feb 1897 in Conway County, Arkansas.
They had 8 children.
I do not know either of their parents.
They appear in the 1860 and 1870 census records. I have no other documentation.
Can anyone provide more information? parents names? documentation to support my information? corrections to what I have?
I would appreciate any help offered.
Thanks,
Rosemary
My husband's lineage: from Jackson Carroll to Lucy C Carroll (Adams) to Emma Adams (Smith) to Neva Luster (Alaska?) Smith (Hutchins) to Vera Evelyn Hutchins (Cantrell) to my husband William Madison Cantrell, JR.

I am searching for any information on any relatives of the Carroll family that emigrated from Co. Clare or Limerick, Ireland and settled in the Hornell or Steuben Co. area of NY in the late 1800's. There was Michael and Thomas Carroll who both worked for the Erie RR during that time. Michael stayed in Hornell and lived on Delaware Ave. and married Mary Burchal and had at least 5 children. Thomas and his wife Katherine moved to Chicago, children unknown. They had a sister Margaret who stayed in Ireland (Co Clare) with her husband Thomas Irwin. She would have been my Great Great Grandmother on my paternal side. Any correspondence would be appreciated!!

Bettye,
I don't know if I'm related to Bartholomew and Catherine Zumwalt or not.
Bart Sr. had sons I cannot trace. Off the top of my head I think they were
James and William.
I have a James Madison Carroll for each of 7 generations going back only to
1829 born in Kentucky. The 7th. generation of James Madison Carroll put on
a census that his mother was born in Kentucky and his father was born in
Virginia.

Does anyone believe that this says that Alexander McWhorter and Mary Stewart
are the parents of the one I am researching, Sarah McWhorter who married
Jeremiah Carroll.
Subject: [ARBRADLE-L] STEWART

For those of you who research the Stewart surname, I am going to post
information which I found in an old York County Genealogical Quarterly. The
original was printed in a Stewart Clan Magazine in 1929.
"The Stewart family from which I descended," wrote John Lewis Stewart,
Conyers, GA, on 13 Dec. 1880, "was from Scotland, of the Royal Family, so
called, and emigrated to Ireland some centuries past, and settled at
Londonderry; so handed down to me by my ancestors. (Wilkie's note: around
1650 Oliver Cromwell put many Scots in Ulster, Ireland). My
great-grandfather was twice married. By his first wife his sons were John,
Samuel and Joseph and some daughters. By his second marriage the sons were
William, Archibald and Alexander, all of whom emigrated to the colonies of
the states, before their independence. John Stewart, the eldest, came many
years before the others; he was clerk of coulrt of Lancaster, PA; and all
the
rest, when they came to America, came there, and stayed some years, after
which all except John Stewart and his family, emigrated to York County,
South
Carolina. The name was originally spelled Stuart, and was changed by John
for the better English, to Stewart; he was a fine scholar and the rest of
the
family accepted the manner of spelling Stewart, in place of Stuart, before
the declaration of independence." (Wilkie's note: history gives Mary,
Queen of Scots, credit for the new spelling).
John Lewis Stewart said in the letter quoted above that his
great-grandfather
was married twice and that "his second wife was the widow Calhoun, who by
her
first husband had four sons who came over before Alexander Stewart and
settled in North Carolina, and the great statesman, John C. Calhoun, was a
son of one of the four, so
said. This is the way it was handed down to me, and I have good reason to
accept it as the truth, from all the information I have been able to acquire
from other sources, and facts obtained by papers and records corroborating
with the above statement."
This article, after some comment on James Calhoun and his wife Catherine
Montgomery, begins the line with a Stuart (first name unknown) and his wife
whom he married in Ireland, name unknown, and who came to Pennsylvania with
their children aboult 1739. The first wife died and this Stuart married,
second, Catherine
(Montgomery) Calhoun, widow of James Calhoun. "They may have removed to
Virginia or North Carolina. According to John L. Stewart his sons were, the
first three having been born in Ireland: John, b. ca 1726, clerk of court,
Lancaster, PA;
Samuel, b.ca 1732, emigrated to York, SC: Joseph, b. ca 1735, emigrated to
York,
SC, William, b. ca 1739, m. Sarah Calhoun, emigrated from York to Xenix, O:
Archibald, b. ca 1742, emigrated to York, SC and remained there: large
family: Alexander, b. ca 1744, m. Elizabeth Barron, York, SC; died in Morgan
County, GA.
(an unknown person wrote in margin that William was the last of the children
of the first wife and that there was another child, name unknown, followd by
Archibald and Alexander, the last three being children of the second wife,
Catherine Montgomery Calhoun.)
end of part one.
Wilkie
part two of Stewart Clan Magazine story of 1929
William Stewart was born in 1739, in County Derry, Ireland. He lived in
South Carolina during the Revolutionary War, says the D.A.R. lineage book,
and he served as a private in Capt. Felix Warley's Company of Scouts, 3rd
Regiment of the South Carolina line, 1779. He married Sarah Calhoun, an aunt
of Hon. John C. Calhoun. (A handwritten notation says that Sarah was also
William's step-sister.) The History of Washington County, Iowa, 1887, says
that as an aged man he removed in 1820 with his sons Samuel and Robert from
York District to Greene County, Ohio, where he died at the age of 93. Mrs.
Kelso (Mrs. Charles M., a descendant) states that he died in 1830. Only two
of his children are mentioned: Samuel, m. Elizabeth Graves:
in Greene County, O., about 1820; Robert, b. Jan. 31, 1789, m. Elizabeth
McElroy, d. Mar. 6, 1867, Greene County, O.
Archibald Stewart has not been traced.
Alexander Stewart was born between 1740 and 1750, most likely in
Pennsylvania, a youngest son. He is said to have come to America when 15
years old, but this may have been his age when he removed from Pennsylvania
to South Carolina and settled in the Catawba Indian reseve in York District
near the Catawba River. He married, about 1774, Elizabeth Barron, eldest
daughter of Archibald and Elizabeth (Ingram) Barron, a family that came from
Pennsylvania with the Stewarts about 1769. She died Oct. 12, 1809, aged 53,
in New (Acquisition?) district, and was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery, two
miles north of Rock Hill, SC. Alexander afterward moved to Morgan County,
GA, where he died. Children born in York district:

Margaret Stewart from Londonderry, Chester County, PA.
James Stewart married Margaret (unknown); James died first... the Widow
Stewart. James and Arthur Stewart were on the list of taxables of Londonderry
(formerly part of Nottingham) township, Chester County, PA, in 1735. James
Stewart/Stuart of Londonderry township dated his will Feb. 26, 1752, and it was
proved Apr. 15, 1752. William Stuart and Matthew Young wer named executors ---
James divided his plantation equally between his sons John and Robert, and
provided for his wife Margaret and his minor daughters Agnes, Jean and Mary.
The widow Margarete evidently rermoved to York County, SC . The will of
Margaret Steward of Camden District, SC undated, "being sick and weak in body,"
was proved at the April court, 1790, in York County, SC., (formed from the
Camden district in 1785). She named as executor "my beloved son, Alexander
McWhorter"; the witnesses were Moses Ferguson and John Young. She gave to James
Young's children L20 in Pennsylvania money, and to Alexander McWhorter's
children the same. "Which said money is in the hands of my son-in-law, James
Young; to her daughter Mary, bed and furnishings". Alexander McWhorter, named as
executor, was dead in 1790, and the May court, 1793, gave administration on
Margaret's estate to widow Mary McWhorter, Agnes Young and James Young, Jr.
These three gave bond may 6, 1793, with John Barron and Elijah Fleming as
sureties. John Barron (who married Jane Duncan) was appointed guardian Oct.
14, 1790, of Mary Duncan, an orphan, and James Young, Sr., was one of the
bondsmen, and July 10, 1793, as administrator (of John Duncan), he sued Mary
McWhorter and Shadrach Rawls. James Young, Sr., in his will May 10, 1793, gave
his daughter Agnes money due him in Pennsylvania. One of the witnesses to
the will of James Young, Jr. Aug. 3, 1809, was John Starr.
James and Margareet's children:

COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD, MOSES LAKE, WASHINGTON STATE
Floyd Arnold Carroll, of Wilson Creek, passed away in his home on April 2, 2008.
Floyd was born April 20, 1931, in Neodesha, Kan., to Hugh and Lucy Carroll. He was raised in the Ephrata/Wilson Creek area and attended school in Ephrata up until the eighth grade. At age 15, Floyd joined the cement finishers' union, working on the Grand Coulee Dam construction as well as other projects. He continued to ply his trade until the age of 75, helping to build the Columbia Basin and pass on his skills to a younger generation of cement finishers.
In 1952, Floyd enlisted in the Army, where he served his country in the Korean War. After his time in the service, he returned home to marry his loving wife Helen.
Floyd was an avid outdoorsman, spending his free time hunting, fishing and camping throughout Eastern Washington. Around the house, he enjoyed working on automobiles, tending his garden and raising animals. Over the years, Floyd has kept a variety of birds, including exotic pheasants, peacocks, and racing pigeons. He was a member of the American Legion, the National Pigeon Association and the Presbyterian Church.
Floyd was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. In addition to the countless individuals he helped in his time with us, he served as a member of the Wilson Creek City Council and as a volunteer firefighter in Wilson Creek. He also played a key role in the restoration of the Wilson Creek Bank.
As much as he did for the community and for those he hardly knew, Floyd's greatest impact was on the friends and family he loved and cared for. Floyd will be remembered and loved by friends and family, all of which are thankful for the time they had with him, but will miss him nonetheless.
Floyd is survived by his wife Helen, sister Treva Allen, two daughters Debra Jean Sharp (Don) and Patricia Anne Vehrs (Greg), son Harold Marcus Carroll, six grandchildren Kellie Marie Ribail (Ken), Jessie Lynn True (Ben), Anthony Alan Vehrs (Tiffany), Starr C. Carroll, Kristine Kay Helvy (Mike) and Ricky Don Norman (Deidre); as well as great-grandchildren Lane and Landon Ribail, Abby and Ella True and Brayden Helvy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Millicent and Francis and two brothers Don and Lloyd.
Those desiring to leave the family their condolences may do so at the Kaysers' Chapel of Memories Web site, which can be found at: www.kayserschapel.com. Donations in memory of Floyd may be made to the Wilson Creek Presbyterian Church.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 5, at noon at the Wilson Creek Cemetery, with a lunch reception to follow at the Wilson Creek School commons.
