Re: [CARROLL] Famous relatives and New England CARROLLS
by Carroll, William (USANYS)
Interested in this because the names John, William and Patrick recur
among my own Carroll ancestors who inhabited the same region and
emigrated to the U.S. between 1825 and 1850. The attached memoir,
written by my great-great granduncle Patrick Boland Carroll (1804-1890)
in two parts dated 1856 and 1878, records an uncle John who settled in
Roscrea and another uncle Patrick who settled in Newburgh NY (first
page, last paragraph), and both raised families. Wondering whether these
may be cousins to yours, as the same given-names recur every second
generation owing to the practice of naming the oldest son after his
paternal grandfather. As you can see, the earliest names recorded in
Patrick's memoir, John "Shawn a Vager" and his own great grandfather
William, are associated with Ballycrenode, a townland three or four
miles SE of Nenagh. In the Kilkeary cemetery nearby is a monument to
"William Carroll of Ballycrenode, Gentleman, who died the 19th day of
February anno dom. 1706", and the abstract of his will at the
Genealogical Office in Dublin names three generations of relatives, but
no sons of his own. I know that my uncle Patrick married in Ireland and
had eight children there before they emigrated about 1849 to Maryland.
His younger brother James, my great-great grandfather (1819-1892),
emigrated with his mother and her mother in 1835, also to Maryland, and
both families eventually settled in Baltimore, where I'm from.
Will Carroll (yes, another William!)

My Carroll line came from Roscrea , County Tipperary Ireland having
come
through Welland, Ontario , Canada to Grand Island , Erie County ,New
York.
In a tiny local book "Grand Island Facts and Folklore, a History of
Grand Island through 1947" by Kay Sheehan says three Carroll brothers
John, William and Patrick settled on Grand Island (near Buffalo ), New
York sometime after 1831. Keep in mind ,this was not long after the
War of 1812. There were still border clashes with the British in the
late 1830's. There was a demand for labor at the lumber mill on the
island . Many Irish immigrants came to the
island to engage in these occupations.
There was a school house on the land of William Carroll Sr. in 1854.
Mass was said by Father F. Uhrich in this school house . The Carroll
families
were among some of families who helped build St. Stephen's Roman
Catholic
Church in the 1860's. I am a descendant from Patrick Carroll.
