I have traced my Carroll family back to the 1700s in Alexandria,VA. I ran
into a wall when I went to the library in Alexandria and found that James
Carroll had been orphaned even though his mother was listed as living. At
around
age 9 she placed him in an apprenticeship with a shoe maker in Alexandria
so
that he could earn a trade. When he became of age he went to live with a
relative who was a tobacconist. His mother was listed as Elizabeth Carroll
(her
maiden name was not mentioned.) This James grew up in the Alexandria area
and as an adult was very involved in helping to retrive the VA land the
federal
government decided not to use as part of the nation's capital(Alexandria,
because it was across the
Potomac.)
If any of this rings a bell, please contact me. I have documents to prove
he is my ancestor but cannot go past his James to find his father who might
have come here from Ireland since it would be the very early 1700's or late
1600's. The most prevalent male names in our Carroll are: James, Charles,
George and Arthur.
Any help would be beneficial. I hope to return to Alexandria next year
to search some more.
Thank you.
Gayle Carroll-Finn

One of the first things I learned in genealogy is that just because two people of the same surname live next door to each other does not necessarily mean they're related. I found no other records for that particular Needham. Have you?

As per my posted inquiry, he was in Twiggs County, Georgia in the 1840 census. He was living near Elisha Carroll and Sarah Brown Carroll that came to Georgia between 1820 and 1830. They are listed in the Wilkinson County (adjacent to Twiggs County), Georgia census in 1830. Two (2) Carrolls, Nedham and William B. Carroll, are living nearby and meet the age brackets for male children of Elisha. There is no will or other data to determine that they are his children at this point.
It is possible that he returned to Noth Carolina, as per the previous posts; however, there is no proof of this, to my knowledge.

Supposedly, my Grandfather William M. Carroll (called "Sherdy" or Sherod) born 1876- had brothers: Tom, Joe and Garfield. They were from Campbell County, TN. Also, my own dad's name was James Garfield Carroll.

Message Board Post:
Dear Carroll Family researcher,
My father's name was James Garfield Carroll. He passed away in 1998 at age 90. His father was William M. Carroll. William also had a brother Garfield.
For a year or so I have been attempting to locate more information on my Grandfather William (called "Sherdy") who was born in 1876. The Sherdy or Sherod could have been a nickname because later official records (except one census record of 1900 with the name Sherod) list him as William M. Carroll. He was raised in Campbell County, TN. William's parents were James Carroll and Elizabeth "Polly" (Morgan) Carroll. Supposedly, William's grandparents (James' parents) were W.H. Carroll and DORA (PERKINS) Carroll; William's maternal grandparents were J.F. Morgan and Sarah (Smith) Morgan. From family I learned that some of the kin lived in the Duff community of Campbell County. Also, from family I learned that supposedly, Grandfather William had brothers Tom, Joe and Garfield.
The more recent knowledge of Grandfather William is that he was employed by the L&N Railroad in Corbin, KY, beginning his job in 1900. He lived both in Knox and Whitley County, KY (both with Corbin addresses). He was married to Nannie Rains (in 1901) (her father, Squire Rains; mother, Millie Carr) of Whitley County (near Williamsburg) and they had 9 children. Grandfather William died in 1939.
So far, after searching thousands of records in Campbell County and surrounding counties, I have found no census records, marriage record or any records with James Carroll and Elizabeth (Morgan) Carroll with their family. Since my Grandfather William was born in 1876, I would think his parents were born in the time frame of 1834-1858, probably near the early 1850s, if he was one of their older children. I have found literally tens of William Carrolls and James Carrolls in Campbell County, TN but none meeting the correct criteria..
Of course, with so many William and James Carrolls on TN files and not knowing complete names of my Carroll ancestors, it is complicated. I would love to learn the ancestors of my grandfather so if you possibly have knowledge of his family, I would be appreciative of any information you can share with me.

Thanks,

Then when you've found everything that way, another method is needed. What I would do is since we know Needham was in Brunswick 1840, 1850 & 1860, we can assume he'll still be there. I'd go back to ancestry, type in Carroll in NC, no first name. Be sure to use the soundex method. After sifting through the thousands of Carroll's that way, you might find:
1870 Federal Census- Town Creek, Brunswick, NC (PO Smithville)
indexed as Nudom
Carrol, Needom age 57 b. NC occupation- farmer
Louisa age 30 b. NC
Palmer age 11 b. NC
Elizabeth age 8 b. NC
Andrew age 2 b. NC
1880 Federal Census- District 28 Town Creek, Brunswick, NC
Carroll, Needham W. age 59 b. NC occupation- farmer
Louisa E. age 41 wife b. NC
Elizabeth B. age 18 daughter b. NC
Andrew J. age 12 son b. NC
Margaret J. age 6 daughter b. NC
Lorenzo age 5 son b. NC
I just re-read this and if I sound a little cocky, I'm not meaning too. I'm just trying to help others learn some good methods. There's a definate need to use your imagination, gut instincts & clues.
Based on all these census records, we now know that Needham married first Mary born about 1821 NC, they had Eliza A. b. 1846 & Mary b. 1849. Then he married Louisa E. b.1839 NC and they had Palmer b. 1859, Elizabeth B. b. 1862, Andrew J. 1867, Margaret J. b. 1874 & Lorenzo b. 1875.
We also know that it looks like Needham had siblings Uriah b. 1825, Joel b. 1827 & Elender b. 1832. Everyone was born in NC, probably Brunswick Co.
Also from these records, it looks like Needham's parents are James Carroll b. 1797 NC & Zilpha b. 1796

Over the years doing research, I've made a discovery at ancestry. If you put "Needham Carroll" in the search window and do a soundex search, the results bring up any Needham's with a surname that sounds like Carroll. So in other words, the soundex search only brings up the last names. It doesn't search "sounds like" Needham.
So here's where you have to get creative...think southern accent, southern drawl and possible Irish accent. I just did that. Here's what I found...
1840 Federal Census- District 356 Twiggs, GA
Needham Carroll
1 male under age 5
1 male age 20-30
1 female age 5-10
1 female age 20-30
1850 Federal Census- Town Creek, Brunswick, NC
Carrell, Zilphy age 54 b. NC
James age 53 b. NC occupation- laborer
Needam age 31 b. NC occupation- laborer
Mary age 29 b. NC
Elender (female) age 18 b. NC
Eliza age 4 b. NC
Mary age 1 b. NC
(Next door was Joel Carroll age 23 b. NC laborer & Elizabeth age 24 b. NC)
1860 Federal Census- Town Creek, Brunswick, NC
Carroll, Nedam age 39 b. NC occupation- cooper
Zilphy age 63 b. NC
Eliza A. age 14 b. NC
(Next door was Uriah Carroll age 35 b. NC cooper & Margaret age 32 b. NC)

So close...and yet so far.....
Our Catherine Carroll (d. 1965) married Frank Donahue.
Our Anna Mitchell(d. approx. 1950) married James Doonan.
Catherine Carroll's parent's names were James from Co. Tyrone(1848-1923) and Annie Regan Carroll from Rosscommon(1868-1916). They met and married in Phila. They had 4 daughters: Mary, Annie, Catherine, and Helen.
All are currently residing at Holy Cross in Yeadon, PA.
A bunch more Irishman but not a Fitzpatrick in the lot.
The search goes on. - However, I just checked in my Doonan stuff to search for a Catherine and found a Katherine DOonan She was the daughter of Eliza Jane Ferns(1863-1953) and William Doonan (1868-1955). They had 8 children. If this seems right, let me know. I can put you in touch with a closer Doonan relation. Nicole

In our family plot in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon Pa., there is a Mary Fitzpatrick, age at death 46, died 4/17/1918, wife of John J. Fitzpatrick. She had 3 children I have been able to locate, they were Michael, Daniel and Terne(Theodore). Her maiden name was Flaherty.
Mary's parents were James Flaherty, Ireland and Mary Regan.

I was hoping that my Catherine Carroll was the daughter of the one I list above. Not sure. Haven't been able to find much info. My Catherine is listed on baptism certificate with father named Thomas but on death certificate with father named James. I do know her mother was Catherine Doony or Doonan Carroll. My Catherine was married to James Fitzpatrick from Mayo. They lived in Phila. PA and she died around 1952 at approx. age 84. I hope this info helps.
