Cal, After I wrote last night, I started looking again. I finally put in Nathan. And came to Carmel. And sure enough all names matched but birthdates. Surely the enumerator could tell a 40 year old man from a 73 yr.old. Wonder if one of the children answered the questions? Strange. Since no birth states were there perhaps a child did do it or a neighbor. Who knows. But your right the 1860 census helps a lot. Thanks for your help.

Sharon, that 1850 census is weird. The names are
correct for Nathan's family as well as chronological
relationship - almost makes one think that this was
a faked enumeration!
The 1860 census, however, seems to substantiate
much of our infornation on the family.
Incidentally, I have the name James Marvin on the
brain-except he is a CHINN not Carroll. The son of
Nathan that is my wife's ancestor is Joseph Martin
Carroll. Color my face RED!
Carrel Folks,,
At last I believe we have some closure on where in Europe, and where in Pennsylvania, our Carrels came from before moving to Ohio. (Y-DNA HaploGroup R1a, YSearch ID# DY8VJ)
This from an obituary for "Grandma Curry", who was Philip and Mary's third child Margaret Carrel, born 20 August 1802. She married George Curry 21 February 1822 in Jefferson County, Ohio and lived out her life in Augusta Township, Carroll County, Ohio. Her sister Catherine Carrel Hart lived nearby.
Obituary for Margaret Carrel Curry:
The obit states that "Grandma" Curry died at 1:30 o'clock p.m. Sunday, March 13, 1898 aged 95 yrs. Grandma Curry was perhaps the oldest citizen living in Carroll County. She was born of German parents in Lancaster Co. Pa. moving to Augusta when but a child and has lived there ever since. She leaves a daughter and two sons behind her. For many years past she had been a member of the M.E. church. Interment at Herrington's churchyard at 2 o'clock Tue.
I wish my own mother Edith Carroll Canter were alive to hear this, but she passed away last March at 85 years.

I have found a Nathan Carmel in 1850 census. Just wondering if this is Nathan Carroll. But the birthdates are way off. And blank where they were born. Family includes Nathan age 40, Mary A. age 36, Melinda 15, Joseph 13, Nathan 11. All these are names of Nathan's ( b. 1777) children. Found them in Clark Co., Monroe twp., Ind. Could someone help me here? The ages are throwing me off. Thanks in advance.

Sharon, you are precisely correct, Martin is correct. Call it a Senior moment or just plain carelessness!
He was a couple of years older than your GGF Nathan,
Jr.
I'm not sure if we ever found Nathan, Sr. in the 1850
census, seems as though we did, but my "brains" are
in Corpus Christi and We are presently up North of
Seattle. Will try to remember to check and if we did
will try to send you a copy.

Cal, Instead of James Marvin Carroll I have Joseph Martin Carroll. Am I reading the census wrong? Have you ever found Nathan in the 1850 census? I am from Nathan 1835 ( gggrand) then John Wiley Carroll. Also I can't find John Wiley in the 1920's census. My grandfather was Charles Cambren son of John Wiley Carroll. I finally found Charles in 1930 census thanks to a nice man in Calif. He had changed his first name.

I should have mentioned in my previous note that
Nathan Carroll, Jr. moved with most of his family from
Missouri to Drumright, Oklahoma around the turn of
the century (1900) where some of that branch still live.

I have the board gatewayed to the list, unfortunately
there isn't any way to do it in reverse.
My wife is the Carroll, descended from Nathan Carroll
who lived (may have been born) in the early 1800s. He
in one account married Jeanette Graham either in WV
or VA, but married again after he went to IN in the early
1800s. Nathan died around 1870 and two of his sons
moved to Missouri in 1879 with their families, James
Marvin and Nathan, Jr.. James Marvin is my wife's
GreatGrandfather.
I would appreciate any information you might have
about Nathan and that family when they were in WV-
Greenbrier county, I believe.
Thanks Marc.

I don't think there's a Carroll in the northern part of WV that doesn't fit into our family somewhere. We're in Tyler, Wetzel, Doddridge and Monongalia Counties just to name a few. Also southern Ohio.
It's storming here today. I'll check some things and get back with you, I hope . . .

I have a 1880 Census listing this family. Living with them was Ellen Carroll (sister-in -law). William J was born in 1838 in New York. My relative James E. Carroll, had a daughter Ellen. I am thinking that the two family's or William and James are brothers. James came from co. Louth, Ireland and his age is listed as 1832/1834/1836? So who knows?James was married to Ann Elizabeth, had children Mary C., Margaret A. ,Ellen M. , Annie E., Grace, William T. and James E.
Does anyone have any of these familys? They lived in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York. In one directory, both were listed in the same town. James on Jefferson st. and William on Harrison. Any help is appreciated!!!!
Thank you
