Hi Maria,
Usually it's someone with the last name of Carroll that has this rumor floating around the family that they're connected to the good Charles. This is interesting. I think it's a fair chance that they're correct. Now having said that, it would seem that the connection to Charles Carroll of Carrollton is really far reaching, although there. If their grandmother Finn is connected to the Mona Gwendolyn Cowell Finn that I have in my file. I don't know much about Mona Finn. (I'm shortening her name)
Mona Finn was born in 1929. She married Charles Hammond Dugan b. 1931. They had five children, Melanie b. 1956, Alison b. 1959, Ann b. 1960, Frances (Frank) b. 1962 and John b. 1964. I don't know anything about the siblings or parents of Mona Finn. It is her husband that descends from the line of Daniel Carroll's of Upper Marlboro. This line of Carrolls not only descend from the same common line of Carrolls that the Charles do, but they're interconnected through marriage at different points throughout time.
The program that I use tells me that the relationship between Mona Finn and Charles Carroll of Carrollton is that she is the "wife of the 1st cousin 7 times removed." Now I don't even want to try and figure out exactly what that means, my brain will short out. Using the charts that I have, you can follow the maze and make the connection. Mona was the only Finn that I had in my file of 962 individuals for this "Carroll Clan."
Now if you'd like to make the connection between this "grandmother Finn" of your relative and the "Carroll Clan" you need to start asking questions, finding names and dates of her siblings and parents. Start building a family file for this grandmother. You just might find a Mona there somewhere. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about the Carrolls or whatever. Let me know how it goes and good luck.

STEALS MARCH ON PARENTS
Miss Hazel Shaw Becomes a Bride In Alexandria
Young Daughter of Proprietor of Glen Echo Park Secretly Weds Walter H. Carroll
When Miss Hazel Shaw, 18-year-old daughter of Lorenzo D. Shaw, proprietor of Glen Echo Park, left her home late Wednesday, ostensibly to visit Washington friends, there was nothing in the minds of her parents to lead them to believe that Cupid had anything to do with the young woman’s trip.
Miss Shaw stole a march on her friends and parents when she came to Washington by becoming the bride of Walter H. Carroll, also aged 18, son of Walter C. Carroll, of Glen Echo, Montgomery County, Maryland. They were married Wednesday afternoon in Alexandria. As soon as the knot was tied the couple returned to Glen Echo, intending to keep their marriage a secret until they were ready to move into their own home.
Carroll, however, made the mistake of confiding the news to a younger brother, who yesterday told “the secret” to the father of the bridegroom.
When the wedding became known the parents of young Carroll invited their son to bring his bride, who had returned to the home of her parents immediately after the ceremony, to their home. He did so, and the “newlyweds” are now part of the Carroll household. The bride’s parents also extended their blessing.
The young people had been sweethearts for a long time, but Mr. Shaw, it is said, on account of the youth of his daughter, discourage Carroll’s attentions.

Mitch,
I am also hunting down a Carroll family that left from North Carolina around the time frame of 1810. There are 2 or 3 Carrolls that pop up in Amite MS around 1818. The census from the next 40 years state they claim to be from NC, and born around 1800. One of the children went by the name of Anderson and the other went by the name of John.
Any possible connections?
Scott-

When you go to AL for the reunion, would you listen to see if DEMPSEY CARROLL/CARRELL might be in the background of that family? Dempsey Carrell (Jr.) served in the Revolution in Duplin County, NC. He then applied for a pension in Wilcox County, AL. I believe he named a son Alexander. An ELIAS CARROLL signed an affidavit for the him, but no relationship was stated.
I am trying to prove whether or not this Dempsey Carrell/Carroll is a brother to my ggg-grandfather, Alexander Carroll who married Lucy Ryal/Royal in 1783 and wrote his will in Duplin/Sampson County, NC in 1827.
Thanks,
Lura

Hello Marc Carroll,
I have relatives who believe their grandmother Finn to be related to the Carrolls of Carrollton. In one of your lists, I did find a "Mona Gwendolyn Cowell Finn." I would appreciate any tips you can offer on how I might trace this possible Finn/Carroll connection.
Thank you!
Maria
