This just sent to me by a volunteer in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, God's Acre Cemetery.
This is very neat, and is a wonderful example of phonetic spelling. Not sure if any search engine would find it though. Still, it's pure Soundex C-640...

Has anyone reached you and answered the question?

CARROLL-L:
This email is in response to a chain of threaded messages, started on April 22, 2005 by Kennth McIntyre. I had responded to a message, Runaway Carrol Servants 1700s by Eric Olson on PA-OLD-CHESTER-L(a)rootsweb.com; and Mr. Olson suggested that I join in on the CARROLL discussion. I am a DARNALL descendant, not of the the famous Col. Henry DARNALL and brother, John DARNALL, but rather of an Edward DARRNA<<l (1671- 1764), who came to America as an Indentured Servant at the age of 17 and settled in Charles County, MD, doing very well. I have been working on my Darnall genealogy since about 2000; and my husband & I recently relocated in St. Mary's County County, Maryland. St. Mary's County is known for "the Arc & the Dove", 1634, which brought the Fedual Colony under Lord Baltimore (a title) to settle in Maryland..

Re PHILLIP DARNALL 1604 - m Mary Calvert, - 1692, sister of Lord Talbolt.
"Was Secretary to Sir George Calvert and accompanied him when he was sent on a diplomatic mission to France by the King. During this mission, which lasted for several years, both were converted to Catholicism. Sir George possessed an estate, Avolon, in Clohsannon, County, Wexford, Ireland, and on 21 December 1626 willed property in Clohannon to Phillip Darnell. Sir George was knighted as Lord Baltimore, but did not live long enough to assume the prerogatives of the office. His son Cecilius, Second Lord Baltimore, and Phillip's sons, Henry and John, were fast friends, and when the King gave him a grant of territory in Newfoundland, he sent Henry and John Darnell with his son Charles. Finding this territory too bleak and in hospitable for their taste, he appealed to the King for a new grant of territory. The King responded with a grant comprising the present state of Maryland. Phillip Darnall, Gent, in 1664 was granted land in Maryland abanded by John Jenkins, and Lord
Baltimore's agents were contioned to pay Phillip his rentals promptly. Phillip and Mary spent many of their later years in London at Lady Somerset's, and apparently Phillip died there. Mary returned to Maryland and died there in 1692. Phillip was never knighted,as often claimed, but was Phillip Darnell, Gent. Administration of his mother's estate was granted to Col. Henry on 2 June 1692.
49 c. Elizabeth 1637 - 1664. (In 1663 was given a special grant of 1500 acres in Maryland, which she bequethed to her brother, Henry.)

"Born 19 September 1737 at Annapolis. Was known as "The Signer" and of "Carrolton" (Md H.M. #12 , 1917, p 282). was last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. He died 14 November 1832. Married at his father's home in Baltimore. (Maryland Gazette.) Was first cousin to his mother-in-law. At age of 90. he laid the cornerstone of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad."
"This couple were great-grandchildren of both Henry Darnall and his second wife, Eleanor [Tatton. Brooke] Darnall, as well as of the first wife."
"There has been a great deal of speculation as to why a man as wealth as Charles Carrol should settle and annuity of 300 lb on his wife, in lieu of her dow rights, and await the passage of a law assuring him that his was legal as a contract with a nineteen year old girl. Henry, his wife, his brother Robert, and Mary, all petitioned the court to pass such an act. The act was passed on 4 June 1768, the day before the wedding occurred, Daniel Dulaney dissenting, on the grounds that existing statutes fully covered such cases. It seems probable that the character of Henry was conducive to such a settlement for the protection of all conerned."

Born abroad, he came to America with his brother, Col. Henry Darnall. Was Provincial Secretary to Lord Baltimore; performed many public services, and acwquired veryconsiderable properties in his short live in America. His wife was daugher of Governor Richard Bennett of Virginia. His will was written 18 February 1684 and probated 14 December 1684 ( Vo; 1, p. 135, Baldwin's Md , Calandar of Wills) Since many Darnalls claim John as their progenitor, it is well to note his only child, as mentioned in his will. -- 218 c. Henrietta Maria: Reputedly, she died young and unmarried and no record of any marriage is extant. However, she is mentioned in Col. Henry Lowe's will, October - November 1717. Her half -sister Elizabeth Lowe married Henry Darnall, son of her cousin Philip Darnall of Portland Manor, Ann Arundell Co., MD.

Searching for Deloris Kessler or her family. She is found in the 1930 Census in Aurora, Kane County, Illinois as the daughter of Fred and Bertha Kessler. Spelling may also be Delores or Dolores.
She is thought to have married Thomas Carroll in the fifties or so and perhaps had three (?) children. The family probably lived in the Chicago area early on, but by the mid to late sixties, Deloris and Tom were living in Florida when contact was lost with us.
Deloris' grandmother Antonia (of Wabash Co., Indiana) was my grandfather's sister and a cousin and I would like to catch up and share family information.
Re: General discussion on Carroll family History:
>>>Eric Olson, you wrote May 8, 2005:
> Did the your Carroll ancestors come to this country in the 1700's as
> indentured servants?<<<
Is this a continuation of a discussion on this list? If so, what is the
background and where in the PA-OLD-CHESTER-L would I find it.? What I am
writing below is from Maryland early days, where the well known CARROLL
family resided, Annapolis at first.
MARYLAND FEUDAL COLONY- 1634, Arc & the Dove, settled in St. Mary's County,
MD, Catholic:
I have been working with my DARNALL ancestry from Charles Co., Maryland; and
our Edward Darnall (1671-1754) came as an indentured servant to Charles Co.,
MD and can be found in Court records there in 1688 -- came from England. My
source is photocopies of portions of H.D. Smith, book on "The DARNALL,
DARNELL Family including................ with Allied Families, Vol I". This
book starts out with Darnall genealogy in England and with Col Henry
DARNALL & brother John DARNALL, Overseers for Lord Baltimore (the title of
the ruling CALVERT govenors of the Fedual Colony) -- John & Henry Darnall's
mother was Mary Calvert, sister of Lord Talbolt, England. Case in point is
that the CARROLL Family of Maryland is closely related to Col. Henry Darnall
& brother John Darnall.. Carrollton, MD, which is just inside the National
Capitol Beltway, bears the name of one of the early Carrolls.
This is vary vague, because I do not want to get Maryland History as part of
PA-OLD CHESTER mailing list. It is inappropriate to do so. I have lived in
the National Capital Area as well as in suburban Philadelphia at various
times.
When doing genealogy studies in Philaelphia Area, I received queries about a
local Darnall family! There is a Quaker Darnalls family, who arrived in
1700, Salem Monthly Meeting, Burlington, County, NJ and the genealogies are
also published in the above listed H.D. Smith book. Also recently,
Baltimore Publishing Comany's, weekly newsletter carried a book on
indentured servants, who came in to the Baltimore harbour from overseas in
early times..
