The following has just been released by the office of the U.S. Surgeon Initiative and I
thought it should be known to everyone on our lists.
Cal Phillips, List Admin.
U.S. Surgeon General's Family History Initiative
Health care professionals have known for a long time that common diseases - heart disease, cancer, and diabetes - and even rare diseases - like hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, and sickle cell anemia - can run in families. If one generation of a family has high blood pressure, it is not unusual for the next generation to have similarly high blood pressure.
Tracing the illnesses suffered by your parents, grandparents, and other blood relatives can help your doctor predict the disorders to which you may be at risk and take action to keep you and your family healthy.
To help focus attention on the importance of family health history, U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., in cooperation with other agencies within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has launched a national public health campaign, called the U.S. Surgeon General's Family History Initiative, to encourage all American families to learn more about their family health history.
In addition to the Office of the Surgeon General, other HHS agencies involved in this project include the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
National Family History Day
Surgeon General Carmona has declared Thanksgiving 2004 to be the first annual National Family History Day. Thanksgiving is the traditional start of the holiday season for most Americans.
Whenever families gather, the Surgeon General encourages them to talk about, and to write down, the health problems that seem to run in their family. Learning about their family's health history may help ensure a longer future together.
My Family Health Portrait
Americans know that family history is important to health. A recent survey found that 96 percent of Americans believe that knowing their family history is important. Yet, the same survey found that only one-third of Americans have ever tried to gather and write down their family's health history.
Because family health history is such a powerful screening tool, the Surgeon General has created a new computerized tool to help make it fun and easy for anyone to create a sophisticated portrait of their family's health.
This new tool, called "My Family Health Portrait" can be downloaded for free and installed on your own computer.
The tool will help you organize your family tree and help you identify common diseases that may run in your family.
When you are finished, the tool will create and print out a graphical representation of your family's generations and the health disorders that may have moved from one generation to the next. That is a powerful tool for predicting any illnesses for which you should be checked.

Hi,
I have an ancestor, Luke Carroll Sr., who fought in the Revolutionary Wars with his brother, Captain John Carroll around 1780. Luke Sr. spent a lot of time in North Carolina and Virginia and his son, Luke Jr., ended up in Tennessee. Does any of this sound familiar?
Yours sincerely,
Lisa Carroll

My great-great grandmother was Rossie Bell Carroll who was married to Rollie Azel Church. Their daughter Gertrude Alma (Church) Lipscomb (Cleo's sister), was my great grandmother. I guess that means that we're distant cousins of some sort!
I'm trying to find a connection to Charles Carroll of Carrollton, do you have any information about that?

Lisa,
The following comes from "Virginia Carrolls and Their Neighbors 1618-1800s" by Elizabeth Carroll Foster, Heritage Books, Inc. 1999
I scanned the material and then proofread it to make certain the wording and abbreviations were as they are in the book. Maybe this is your Luke Sr. and Jr. At least it will give you a place to look. Hope this is helpful to you.

Hi,
I'm a direct descendant of Luke Carroll, father of Alfred Carroll in Tennessee. Luke was born in 1772 in Virginia. Does anyone have more information about him, his wife (Elizabeth Murphy), where he came from in Virginia and especially about his father, Luke Sr.? I came to a dead end trying to look up Luke Sr. or any information about him.
Many thanks!

My response does not directly connect to your family. However, there are two names in your family that are not all that usual- Alexander and Wylie. In fact I think I have seen only one other Wylie. Since names tend to be used over and over in families, I wondered if there might possibly be a connection to my family.
Alexander Carrell married Lucy Ryal on April 7, 1783 in Duplin County, NC. Alexander listed a son Wylie in his will in 1827, and I have never been able to find what happened to that Wylie. Most of the Carrolls of that area moved to the southwest, but my ancestor, Major Hardy Carrell, moved to Stokes County, NC.
Do you know where Hamilton Alexander Sr. was born or who his parents were?

Hello,
I have done a lot of research on several Carroll families one of which is the family of Bishop John Patrick Carroll of Helena who formerly was the President of St. Joseph's ( now Loras College). Mrs. Martin ( O'Farrell " Carroll ) was his mother.
Here is the obituary which was published in the
Dubuque Herald newspaper dated Wednesday, 1 February 1899. This copy was provided to me by my cousin, Sister JoAnne Sullivan.
"A Good Woman Has gone To Her Reward.
Deceased was the Mother of the late Reverend Dr. Charles Carroll and Reverend Dr. John Carroll, had been a resident of Dubuque for many years, death occurred at 10"45 o'clock yesterday morning. (para) Mrs. Catherine Carroll, wife of Martin Carroll, passed away at the family residence, 77 Nevada street at 10:45 o'clock yesterday moring. She had been in rather poor health for a short while but her illness did not assume critical form until a few hours previous to her death. Earlier in the morning her son, Father John Carroll, of St. Joseph's college had left his mother in a condition that did not seem dangerous and was on his way to college when a messenger notified him of his mother's death. In the death of Mrs. Carroll there has been removed from the community, a fond wife, a loving mother and a kind neighbor. She was a women of nobile christian character, and being charitably inclined, many were the kind acts she did for those whom she knew were in spiritual or tempora!
l need. (para) Deceased was born in Ireland, December 25, 1830, making her 68 years and 3 months old. She came to this country in 1851, landing in New York city. About a year later Martin Carroll, her surviving husband, who had known her from childhood, arrived and on April 19, 1857, they were married, and the same year they came to Dubuque, where they have since resided. Coming here in the early days, full of pluck and energy, this sturdy couple helped to lay the foundations of civilization, and they took an important part in the early development and improvement of our city. (para) Deceased was the mother of several children, and through her gentle training and kindly influences, she lived to see grow up around her own fireside two brilliant sons, the late Reverend Dr. Charles Carroll, who died about three years ago, and Reverence Dr. Carroll of St. Joseph's college in this city, both of whom were among the brightest young men ever reared in Dubuque. The other survi!
ving children of deceased are Philip Carroll of Joliet, Illinois, Mrs.
J.C. McCarthy of Chesnut, Montana, James Carroll of East Dubuque, Miss. Anna M., who is with her sister in Montana, and Miss. Mary Carroll, the well known muscician and present organist at the Cathedral. The children living outside the city have been notified and if possible the funeral will be deferred until they can reach home."
