Am hitting a dead end in trying to research my family ties back in Ireland, and wanted to know if somebody out here can provide some advice or point me in the right direction. I hired a firm called Irish World in County Tyrone, N. Ireland to do a search of my grandfather's family and they came up empty-handed...no information on his birth or existence of his parents or any siblings (if any). Tried looking at web sites for several other organizations public & private & came up short also, so am getting frustrated.
My grandfather (James Joseph Carroll) was born on Nov. 3, 1863 in Clogher, County Tyrone, Ireland. Sometime between then and December 17, 1886, he came to the USA and joined the US Marines. After discharge he lived the remainder of his life in Brooklyn, New York. He married a Delia Carey from Cork (I believe) sometime between 1886 and 1900.
I know he came from the Clogher area of Ireland because I have his military records, enlistment and discharge papers from the US Marines indicating date and place of birth, but that's all I have on my Grandfather.
I do not know if he had any siblings and if any of them ever came to the USA or if he had any other relatives that came here or remained in Ireland. I have been advised that he was born a few months before the government started keeping birth records in 1864.
If anybody has done any Carroll family research that included Carrolls in Clogher or might have some advice where to turn, I thank you in advance.
Best regards..........Bill Carroll, Colorado Springs, CO

Thanks Sarah.
I'm going to send that last one on to the rest of the folks I've been sending stuff to.
The next to the last one shows a definite connection from Brunswick and Lunenburg Counties in VA to Granville County in NC. I really don't understand all that.
Was the last one in the book about Granville County?? If so, I wonder why. That last one proves what I had believed - that THOMAS was one of the early Carrolls. He was in Duplin when "early John" wrote his will in 1761. Folks, we are getting close!! I believe our early ones were John, Thomas, Dempsey, Sr. Moses, (unless he moved away between 1784 and 1790).
I know that Thomas was the father of James. And maybe Jesse???? Or Jesse could have been part of the 'older generation"? Thomas was probably the father of Patience, who married Samuel Gavin, probably as his second wife.
I believe Dempsey, Sr.'s sons MAY have been Alexander, Stephen, Edmund, and Dempsey, Jr.
"Early John's" sons were John and Joseph.
Just guessing,
Lura
PS - I'm out of here until after church tonight.

A cousin sent me the following info (I have more information about this family on my website at www.homestead.com/suttonplace/index.html) To: descendants of the Sutton's, Carroll's, Trussell's and others. The first Sunday in October, which this year is October 5, is homecoming at Hickory Springs church in Jackson Parish, LA, where John Sutton and his twelve year old son Senica M. Sutton are buried. Also many Carroll's, Trussell's etc. Many kin. John Carroll (born in Adams Co., MS) who fought in the battle of New Orleans was the preacher at this church many years. It is said that John Sutton donated the land for the church & cemetery. This is probably true since the old Sutton home place is across the road and about 300 hundred yards from the front of church. I have been to where the home was several times. The church was built in 1898 replacing the log cabin church that was located on the other side of cemetery. I have a picture of this log cabin church which was torn !
down many years ago. Also on same date every year not to far from Hickory Springs is the Jimmy Davis Tabernacle where they are having their I guess you would call it homecoming because it was built on the old Davis home place. Mary & I knew Jimmy Davis so attended one time before he died. Plenty singing, we enjoyed it. The Hickory Springs homecoming consist of all day singing in the church, visiting on the grounds, dinner on the grounds, telling old stories etc. This is where we came from. Senica Sutton born Jan. 19, 1853 was the brother of Henry Fletcher Sutton, Stephen McKinley Sutton, George Washington Sutton, Jackson Whitfield Sutton and Emily Jane Sutton McCoy. At 12 years Senica died of a fever October 2nd 1865 just before his dad got home from the Civil War. John was captured in the battle of Irish bend just out of Franklin, La. April 14, 1863. We do not know how long or where he was held. John died in 1870

In looking for info on my great, great-grandfather Daniel Carroll (in 1870, living at 48th and Haverford Aves. in Philadelphia, I came across the following info:
I have burial records for a large cemetery plot at Old Cathedral Cemetery bought by Michael Carroll. Buried in the plot are Margaret Carroll, William Carroll, Patrick Dunn, Elizabeth Mower, Hattie Carroll, Catherine Mower, Margaret Dunn, Julie Hilrey, Joseph Carroll, Hanna Dunn, Dennis Carroll, Bridget Carroll, Michael Carroll, Hanna Carroll, Thomas Carroll. Info includes their age and date of death.
In checking records at Our Mother of Sorrows Church, I came across and copied marriage records for Thomas Carroll/Catherine Farrell and William Flanigan/Mary Carroll. Also baptismal records for Margaret Carroll, Catherine Carroll, Thomas Carroll, Anna Carroll and Daniel Carroll.
If you think any of this is relevant, I'll send details. Also, do the names Jacob Mower, William Mower or Chris Taggart mean anything to you?
