Looking for Carrolls from Boston Area. My grandmother was Anna Carroll b 1888 m 1915 to Thomas Cummings b 1883. They were married in Boston (1915). They were both from Ireland and arrived in Boston around 1904-6. They both worked at the Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston. They moved to NYC in 1915.
Anna Carroll's siblings were: Mary "Molly", Catherine, Jane "Jennie", Isabella, Helen (or Helena) m 1930 to Philip McKinnon, Johanna, John "Jack" and Daniel. Their parents were William and Mary O'Brien of Ireland.
I found death certs for some sisters and a marriage certificate for Helen m 1930 to Phillip McKinnon. (Jennie was married to Phillip McKinnon she died 1928 & 1930 he married Helen). I never found anything on her brothers. They lived in Dorchester and Roxbury. McKinnon lived in Cambridge and is listed on his marriage certificate under occupation "Proprietor (Auto Parts)".
Other name connected with Carroll & Cummings is Byrnes.
I appreciate any information you may provide. Thank you :)
I just reread a message I posted a few days ago, and I realized I made a
mistake in the message. Margaret Theresa Carroll married Gilbert Samuel
Merrill, not Frederic Merrill.
The message should have read: "Seeking information about my great
grandmother, Margaret Theresa Carroll (1861-1945). She immigrated about
1875 from Queenstown, Cork, Ireland. She came to Franklin, New Hampshire
where she married Gilbert Samuel Merrill. She was the oldest, or one of the
oldest, of thirteen children including two brothers, David and Peter, who
also immigrated to America."

Hi again Carroll, I have emailed Duane with the Emmett Starr info., and he has ordered the book. My question in all this is why Hugh Carroll, moved his family onto the Cherokee reservation in IT OK., and apparently lived there until he shows up on the 1860 census in McDonald Co. Mo. Were the Carroll's pure Celtic as is stated in Goodspeed histories?, if so why did they move to and live in IT, and why does Goodspeed list the wife of Hon. John Carroll as Susan Ward, but Emmett Starr states she was Susie Carroll, daughter of a Stephen Carroll. I am wondering now if Hugh and Stephen are related, could they have been brothers? This is a real mystery. Katy

Duane,
At least two of us are also trying to solve this mystery. Both of us have the same info you mentioned plus the oral family tradition of having Cherokee blood some where in the family lines. The Hon. John may have been a cousin of my ancestor DeRosey Carroll who lived in Charleston, AR and was killed by Jawhawkers in 1863. So far I have not been able to confirm this. Have you found additional info. yet?--Carroll

William Taylor Carroll was born in about 1847. The son of James Carroll (b Penn in abt. 1816) and Hannah (b. in IN abt 1820). He appears as Taylor in 1850, and then as F Wm. T. His grandparents were Carey Carroll of NJ and Ellen found on the 1860 Cleremont County, OH census. The Carrolls moved across the Ohio River and were on the Bracken County, KY census in 1870. James had died. Hannah is living with her daughter Sarah, and Ellen is two houses below. William may be listed Florance in this family.

Give the location in Ohio, please.
Charles Carroll, the signer of the Declaration of Independence, when he
completed his education in France, had a gathering of cousins. He then
emigrated to America. Has anyone ever come across any anecdotal evidence
about where he might have spent some time after completing his education in
France?

I'm trying to find the connections of a Charles F. Carroll
born in OH in 1830 or (more likely) 1840. He moved to IL
and married there in 1866, after serving in the Civil War.
My ggrandmother's first name was Veronica, but she went by Ann. I was
wondering if anyone else had this first name used in their family.

I also found 1 James Carroll age 4 in the 1850 Barbour Co AL census along with parents Thomas & Sarah Carroll. The age would be in the range for your J.D.W. Carroll.
Thanks to Homer Jones for the Civil War info & Charles a Dale Co AL Carroll researcher.
Good Luck,

John Carroll, son of Hugh and Anna Carroll m. either Susan Ward or Susan Carroll in the early 1850´s in Indian Territory.
Dr. Emmett Starr in his History of the Cherokeee Indians says John´s wife was Susan Carroll, the daughter of a Stephen Carroll and Nannie Ward.
GoodSpeed, History of Benton, Washington, Carroll, Madison, Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian Counties, Arkansas. Chicago: The Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1889 says: Hon. John Carroll was reared on the frontier, and received his education by his own personal efforts, mostly among the Cherokee Indians. When his father removed to Missouri he (John) remained in the Indian Territory, and was married in the Cherokee Nation to Susan Ward, a quadroon. She died in 1856, leaving two children; Hugh, who was accidentally killed in 1885, at Vinita, where he resided, and Fincher, who now resides at Huntsville, Ark.
GoodSpeed said Susan "Ward" died and John m. Hulda Holcomb whereas a Dr. Emmett Starr says in his book, History of the Cherokee, that John m. Susan Carroll and mentions no second wife, which he obviously has according to census records. At least GoodSpeed seems to have the second wife listed correctly.
Starr says nothing about Susie dying, but something surely happened to her as John shows up on later census records with their two children and a new wife named Hulda (Holcomb) and 2 new children supposedly with Hulda.
This is not my family, and I have no bias either way? This has nothing to do with NA roots, nor my Shelton line other than John Carroll´s mother might possibly have been a Shelton. The only reason I am researching Carroll is to try to find out the maiden name of Hugh Carroll´s wife, Anna. In researching for Anna, I have accumulated quite a lot of Carroll info but no actual proof of John´s mother or wife.
Having said that, I would like to identify John´s wife correctly. I am mainly trying to reconcile the different accounts from Starr and GoodSpeed with the fact that John Carroll is shown on the 1860 census with Children Hugh and John Fincher and a "new" wife named Hulda and two children supposedly with Hulda. He shows up on later census records still with Hulda and has additional children. This would imply that either he divorced, or Susan left or possibly died.
I have no idea which is correct. I have ordered Starr´s books , but it will take some time to get them and see what more I can uncover.
I would like to know if any Carroll researcher can verify Johns wife and also am very interested in verifying the name of John´s mother. I am aware of all the book info, but want something more substantial.
