Is there ANYONE who was related to the Carroll families in early MS? There
was a group listed in Adams County in 1810. Names included John, Luke,
Moses, Robert and William.

Hi list
I'm new and I searched the archives before I sent this
message. Much to my chagrin, it seems most of the
mention of the Carroll family in MD begins in the
1760s or so. MY connection to the Carroll family is
through James Carroll who married Ann Bond November
24, 1736 at St. John's Protestant Episcopal Church in
Baltimore, Maryland. I do not know anything about his
lineage. Does anyone have any record of him in their
databases? Thanks for any and all help!
Meriah

MARGARET BLACK 1811. She was born 1794 in VA.
Notes for JAMES TILLMAN CARROLL:
Research per Ann Berglind: from court records of Cabel Co., VA, Charles could be brother
or father of Samuel. Charles, Clinton A., Tremenda, and Samuel are all listed. This
could also be James. James and wife lived near Samuel and Amanda in WV in his old age.
Betting this is the father and mother of Samuel. Difficulty here is that he is
step-father of Samuel.

Information supplied by Mabel Ora Byer: He was born in Virginia and moved to Indiana with
his Mother and StepFather. Later they moved back to Cabel Co., VA. where he joined the
Methodist Church. He married Elizabeth Sexton and had two boys. She died days after
childbirth and he married Amanda a year later in Ohio. Samuel and Amanda raised the two
boys.
The couple moved from Marion KS in 1877 or 1878 to Chautauqua KS in 1888 and to Neosho
Rapids in 1900. They moved to be closer to the James Gilliam Carroll Family. (From the

____________________________________________
This Information was sent to me (Martha) by Dora Turner, daughter of James Gillam Carroll,
granddaughter of Samuel and Amanda Black Carroll who lived in Hartford, Kansas. She wrote
this to me just a few weeks before she died in 1976:
Samuel Carroll was born near Hamlin, West Virginia. He and Amanda Ann Black Carroll
lived there for a few years after they were married, then left and went to Indiana. After
living there for a few years, they went back to West Virginia, lived (there) a few years
then came back to Indiana where their children were born, near Pendleton, Indiana.
However, the Census for Cabel Co. WV shows Samuel Carroll living there for some 30 or more
years Before his moving to KS permanently.
William Willis Suffield was an Indiana man, too and he and Martha Alice Carroll were
married in Indiana, and soon after, came to Marion Kansas, and bought a farm.... The farm
where they always lived and raised all their children.
Then, in about 1883, the rest of the Samuel Carroll family came to Kansas to Marion
County. Aunt Emma and her family (Husband Samuel Musick) and children came to Neosho
Rapids, Kansas and bought a home there. In May of 1900, James Gilliam Carroll, family,
Samuel, and Amanda Black Carroll came to Neosho Rapids to live. Samuel was blind a few
years before his death and died on April 8th, 1909. Amanda died in 1908.
Amanda & Caroline Black's parents were both red headed and all their children were red
headed. Amanda had the most beautiful red curly hair.
They were all Methodists. Caroline & Amanda Black's father was very wealthy. He had a big
Inn on the highway in West Virginia, and had several slaves. Amanda was raised in luxury
but then she married a poor man with two small boys.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I remember our mother telling me that when Grandma Suffield (Wm. Willis) decided to come
to Kansas, he had already met Martha Alice Carroll and decided he was going to marry her.
He told that he was leaving for Kansas and if she wanted to marry him, it was now or
never. She was only 13 years old but they were married and came to Kansas in a covered
wagon ... One of several in a wagon train. Eventually more of the Carroll's came to
Kansas to be with the ones who had come west. Martha.
William Willis Suffield. He was English.
William was one of 13 children. At age 10 years, he assumed the responsibility for his
parents. His father was an invalid and his four older brothers had joined the military.
He came to Kansas in 1873. William had decided to come to Kansas. He had already met
Martha Alice Carroll and decided that he was going to marry her. He told her that he was
leaving for Kansas and if she wanted to marry him, it was now or never. She was only 13
years old and he was 23, but they were married and came to Kansas in a covered wagon
between 9/1/1876 and Dec. 30, 1876. One of several in a train. Eventually more of the
Carroll's came to Kansas to be with the ones who had come west.
The Suffield's were farmers. They owned a large amount of property and developed a very
prosperous farm southwest of Marion. It is the farm Mabel remembered as a child. The
family joked that he kept Martha barefoot and pregnant. Her first child was born when she
was just 15, and she had 10 children. Jennie was oldest of the children and her daughter
Mabel was born in the same house on the family farm. Mabel remembers spending time at
the farm: " they raised watermelons. They wouldn't cut them to eat them, they would kick
them apart."
Family history tells that William was a womanizer.
Services were held at the Aubine Church, The Rev. Stanley conducting the services. He is
buried in the Clancy Cemetery. He died at his farm where he had lived for 59 years. He
was 82, 8 months, and 12 days at the time of his death. Contributing to his death was
cronic Intestitial Nephitia for 10 years and Setene Seluions for 15 years.
Does anyone have information on Asa Carroll of Botetourt Co. Va. in early
1800. His wife's name was Susanne Williamanson. Asa and his wife's name were
on the marriage license of his daughter Mary Jane Carroll who married John
Strewart Crawford in 1857 in Bedford County Va. I would appreciate any
information.
Been following all the posts on the Carroll family, and thought I'd throw mine in the ring again. Looking for the father of Hugh Carroll b. near Martinsburgh, Va. According to Goodspeed history page 1050, Hugh's father came from Ireland and was a hero in the Battle of New Orleans, 1815. Of course I do realize that these histories were submitted by the people their selves, so they could have anything written up about the family. Thanks , Katy
Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to
Griffin's Book of Irish Americans mentions other early Irish settlers
including one Edward Nugent who according to a report in 1586 may have been
one of the first to kill a Native American, and two Irishmen named Darbie
Glaven and Dennis Carrell who served Captain John White in Virginia in 1587.
Janet,
Here are the Sullivan County, TN Carroll's..Just a rough list. I haven't been
researching but for a short time. Most of the information is taken from Sul.
Co. Census's of 1850,1860 and 1880 and some information is from family
members who live in Sul. Co..I used only logic on placing the Carroll
families, (Children of the second generation of Carroll's are pretty
accurate) just to get some kind of order..I plan to research in the Sullivan
County area in Sept. of this year. I have a lot to learn. I do have quite a
few emails of Carroll researchers that lists Carroll's of NC, SC and VA with
familiar names, but cannot connect. I wish there was someway to put these
families in proper order. Any suggestions? Maybe start where the Boat come
in?lol
The Jordan you asked me about is here, son of Starlin. I have seen the Jordan
you mentioned death cert..I really can't figure how these families connect.
So many common names!! Let me know if you see something I don't.
George and Sarah Carroll is my line.
I hope this list doesn't scramble when I send...lol
like to hear from this families decedents.
Madison Carroll was living in the home of Owen White in 1860.
Janet - George is my 3 great grandfather, daughter Elizabeth my 2 great
grandmother. I am at a brick wall with George. Only have info for
Elizabeth and brother William. (William died during the War.) I noticed you
(or someone else on the list) had a Jordan listed in one of the other
families. William had a son Jordan who lived out his life in Campbell
County. William, Jordan and Jordan's son Samuel all had the same middle name
- Carter. Perhaps that is George's wife's maiden name????
I believe Anna Carroll, living in the Pebly household, might be George's
daughter-in-law. There is a marriage record for Anna Pebly and Samuel
Carroll in 1842 in Campbell County. Rumor has it that Samuel deserted her
and their three children. I've had no luck locating Samuel and the new
family he supposedly started with a second wife.
The rest of the Carroll's in Campbell do not appear to be connected to
George - or at least nothing has been discovered to connect them so far.
I haven't found a trace of George and Mary after the 1850 census.
ANYONE out there descend from George and Mary????? Janet (yes, Janet)
