My great grandmother was Elizabeth (Lizzie) Carroll. She married my great
grandfather, John Monahan. They settled in Mass.
Lizzie's family also came over from Ireland. It is believed that her mother,
at least one brother and sister came with her. Lizzie's family traveled on
to the midwest. We always thought it was Iowa but couldn't confirm this
until recently. I found a picture of a man, handsome. It was taken at a
professional studio. Underneath his picture is the word "James" which I
believe to be the name of the photo studio and "Des Moines, IA". This man
must be a Carroll.
According to a relative who knew family that went to visit and remembers them
coming to visit us, they lived in an area where everything was Carroll. This
would lead me to believe that they lived in a town called Carroll. At least
one of Lizzie's sisters became a nun. She would come to visit and need to
stay at a local convent.
Possible names in the family are Margaret, Thomas, Mary, Agnes, James, and
Charles.
If any of this sounds familiar or if you have any connection to the Des
Moines, IA area, please e-mail me at fmytree(a)aol.com. I have been at a dead
end on the Carroll family for so long.
Thanks
Barbara
Doughoregan Manor is the family homestead of the Carroll family in
Maryland. It was begun by Charles Carroll, the Settler. Charles Carroll
the Signer is buried there in the family chapel. It is currently owned
by a Carroll family member, as it has been for all time since the
Settler first established it. If the seeming intentions are fulfilled,
the intact 1000 acres will soon be the site of a development. What a
shame for the family but possibly a boon for researchers as the family
has been very tight lipped. The last time the house was toured by any
group was in 1976 for the Bicentennial. Maybe now it will change.

Indiana. What time frame was Emma Ruth Carroll? Was she of possible
Native American descent?

His comely young widow, aged 23, has

Someone determined to be anonymous in Stowe, Vermont:
I was somebody.
Who, is no business

Anna Hopewell's grave in Enosburg Falls, Vermont has an epitaph that

Here lies the body of our Anna
Done to death by a banana
It wasn't the fruit that laid her low
But the skin of the thing that made her go.
More fun with names with Owen Moore in Battersea, London, England:

Under the sod and under the trees
Lies the body of Jonathan Pease.
He is not here, there's only the pod:
Pease shelled out and went to God.
The grave of Ellen Shannon in Girard, Pennsylvania is almost a
consumer tip:
Who was fatally burned
March 21, 1870
by the explosion of a lamp
filled with "R.E. Danforth's
Non-Explosive Burning Fluid"
Oops! Harry Edsel Smith of Albany, New York:
Born 1903--Died 1942
Looked up the elevator shaft to see if
the car was on the way down. It was.
In a Thurmont, Maryland, cemetery:
Here lies an Atheist
All dressed up
And no place to go.
In a cemetary in England:
Remember man, as you walk by,
As you are now, so once was I,
As I am now, so shall you be,
Remember this and follow me.
To which someone replied by writing on the tombstome:
To follow you I'll not consent,
Until I know which way you went.

The portion of our website entitled "Skeletons in the Closet" has been
updated for the first time in over one year.
This section of the website is a clearinghouse of all the family names that
we are researching. (Two separate families---plus some notable UNRELATED
individuals...)
This has been a huge task. There are an additional 3547 names added to the

It's been a while since I've posted any Carroll queries, thought this might
be the time to post my latest find.
This past week found that my Bridget CARROLL MADDEN died in Missouri and was
buried in Chicago. Actually, Hillside, in Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery.
There is is buried with:
her husband, Daniel MADDEN buried 1912 age 65
her two sons: Bernard buried 1906 age 39
Martin buried 1912 age 40
Martin's wife, Laura buried 1907
also buried in the family plot is William FLANNERY age 29 1907
Mr. Flannery was the first to be buried, assume this was Laura's brother.
Bridget, b. ca. 1846 in Ireland, is the daughter of Martin CARROLL b. ca.
1810 Ireland and Margaret. b. ca. 1810 Ireland. Martin and Margaret are
buried in Burlington, Iowa.
Any one look familiar?

I have information on my CARROLL family from the 1880, 1900 & 1910 census.
Of course it is inconsistent. It would be great to find a relative out there
and maybe together we could put all the pieces together.
In 1880 the family was living in Simpson County, KY in the township of
Franklin.
In the 1900 and 1910 census the parents and the younger children were living
in Napa County, CA and living in the Napa Township.
CARROLL, John -born betw 1842 & 1844 (see below for inconsistent info found)
UNKNOWN, Cynthia - born betw 1844 & 1845 (see below for inconsistent info)
children:
CARROLL, Hannah (Annie), born KY abt. 1862, married John Vanmeter WINSTEAD,
lived Hardin County KY. Died 1904 in Louisville KY.
CARROLL, Johnie, born in KY abt. 1868.
CARROLL, Jamie, born in KY abt. 1872.
CARROLL, Henry M., born in KY in 1873, in CA in 1900.
CARROLL, Charles T., born in KY in 1877, in CA in 1900.
CARROLL, Elizabeth, born in KY in 1880, in CA in 1900.
CARROLL, May, born in KY in 1882, in CA in 1900.
CARROLL, Francis, born in KY in 1886, in CA in 1900.
CARROLL, Blanche, born in KY in 1889, in CA in 1900.
The census reports indicate that there was at least one other child born.
And either May or Blanche CARROLL married a gentleman who was the warden of
San Quentin Prison.
Inconsistent information found:
JOHN CARROLL (C or E), born betw. 1842 & 1844. In the 1880 and 1900 census
it said he was born in Ireland. In the 1910 census it shows that he was born
in TN.
CYNTHIA CARROLL, born betw. 1844 & 1845. In the 1880 census her first name
was listed as Seintha. I don't know her maiden name. In the 1880 census it
shows she was born in KY. In the 1900 census it shows that she was born in
TN. In the 1910 census it shows that she immigrated in 1846 from either
Ireland or England (I cannot read the writing).
It would be great to hear from others researching this family.

Hello Cousins,
I am looking for information on William John Carroll born May 2, 1871 in Saginaw MI. He was married to Edith Waffle who was born in 1872. They both moved to Toledo OH around the turn of the century.
His parents names were Wm Carroll and Abbie Scarf. Wm and Abbie were from Sarnia Canada. I was told by grandparents long ago that our family also were in Pennsylvania, but I do not know when. An important family name that has been passed down as a middle name is Foster.
I am hoping to make a connection back to Ireland. I would be grateful for any help.

This is the first time that I am posting on this list. I hope that I will
make a connection with someone working on the Carroll (or similar spelling)
line. I am really researching my RICE family who were from Brooklyn<NY. I
have come to a basic dead end and are researching connecting lines that might
help me in my search for the RICE family.
My great grandmothers name was Elizabeth Josephine RICE b.[1870] in Bklyn, NY
to Michael RICE and Catherine CARROLL. Mike and Catherine had another child
while they were living with a person called Peter CARROLL in 1868, who I am
thinking might be her brother or father. The address was 103 Carl Street in
Brooklyn, NY. Peter is listed in the Brooklyn business directory as CARROL,
Peter, laborer, 103 carll.
I know that this is practically nothing to go on but as of right now it is
all that I have. I do believe that this family was of Irish decent because
some of the info that I gathered concerning the daughter, lists parents [mike
and cath.] as being from Ireland and NY.....
I'd like to hear from you if you think that you might connect.
Thanks and have a great day.
Joan
