I am looking for information about Margaret Carroll b. 1826. She married William R.
Bobbitt in Grayson Co., VA (now Carroll Co.) in 1846. Her sister, Sarah Carroll, married
Wm. R. Bobbitt's brother James Bobbitt in 1856. Family history says Margaret Carroll was
an orphan. She supposedly came from Ireland with her parents as a young girl. Her
parents died at sea. Her uncle, John Carroll, finished the trip with her, raised her and
acted as surety for her marriage. She is buried in the Bobbitt-Harris cemetery on the
James Bobbitt farm outside Hillsville, VA.
The supposed sister, Sarah, and her husband, James Bobbitt, moved to Randolph Co., MO
prior to 1880.
A great-uncle may have been Archbishop John Carroll of MD.
Is anyone else researching this line? Any information would be appreciated.

Your James is a little late for my line, but ...
Carrell (also spelled Carroll) family was in Pennsylvania then moved to
Licking County, Ohio then Bureau and Henry Counties, Illinois . Two
brothers in Pennsylvania were James and John, so perhaps someone in this
line besides me could help you. I come from James Carrell's daughter
Rebecca, and do not have the line any further.

Hi. I looked at your webpage and saw you have Carrolls and Moores in
your ancestry. I wonder if you know anything about my ancestors. They
were from North Carolina. Charles Moore married Elizabeth Carroll in
Granville County NC in 1812. He was there from 1810-1850. Going by the
census records, he would have been born about 1790. Thanks.

I'm hoping someone can tell me more of Susan or Thomas or Ellen in the
census I've listed below.
I believe this Thomas was either a CARRELL, or always got his name
spelled CARROLL until later years.
In the
1830 Census There was a Thomas CARROLL in Marion County ILL.
Thomas CARROLL M: 1 UNDER 5 1- 10-15 1 30-40
F: 3 ...5-10 2..15-20 1.....20-30 1..40-50
1840 Census - Marion County ILL - Thomas CARROLL

10to20, 1 40 to 50, females under 10, 1 30 to 40, 1
1870 Census Clay Co. Il. Oskaloosa Twp.
#204 Thomas CARROLL 52 Farmer b. N.C.
Ellen 1 ILL
Susan 87 N.C.
I must have been "out to lunch" when I posted the information for James M.
Carrol. It should have been John M. Carroll. Also, the of marriage to
Allie Mae Richards should be July 1899.
John M. Carroll: born 04 Mar 1871, married Jul 1899, Died 13 Jul 1941.
Parents: Abner and Jane Carroll
Children:
Annie: born 14 Aug 1900
Mattie Sue 15 Dec 1901
Ade Mae 13 Dec 1908

Does anyone have a connection with my husband's g grandfather,
ISAAC NEWTON CARRELL? Born--mid to late 1800's---

<< Is there anyone on this list tracing the surname CARRELL? When I signed

Judith,
You might not want to rule out researching both variations for the same
family. My family's name changed back and forth from Carroll to Carrell
depending where they were living, or which records clerk was doing the
writing. Or in some cases, apparently the temperature or barometric pressure,
because I've found family members living next door to one another in
censuses, listed as Carrolls and Carrells.
As a matter of curiousity, I once made a list and found 22 variations of the
name.
Jo Carrell/Carroll/Caril/Karyl, etc.......
I am looking for my great grandfather. All I know is his name, James
Carrell or Correll, and that he was born about 1860 or 1861, possibly in
Indiana. He
married Flora Fugate 17 Sep 1883 in Oswego, KS. They had two boys, Albert
(my grandfather) and William. Then James left the family. I just recently
learned my great grandfather may have spelled his name CORRELL. His
descendants (from Albert and William)have used the spelling CARRELL. James
was probably born about 1860, possibly in Indiana. Divorce papers said he
went to Franklin, Missouri around 1890-92. A son, Elvin Ora CORRELL's
social security application shows his father as James Auther CORRELL and his
mother as Rebecca Milten. Elvin was born 20 Jun 1895 in Burkett, Stark,
Indiana and social security list Elvin's death in Gillette, WY. Chloe Edith
CORRELL was born 8 Dec 1903 in Miller, MO and her mother was Nellie Agnes
Cunningham. Social Security list Chloe's death in Gillette, WY. Folklore
said James went to Wyoming to homestead.
If you have any information on these names, I am very interested.

Hello, Carrollers,
Is there anyone on this list tracing the surname CARRELL? When I signed on,
one of the alternatives to CARROLL was CARRELL.
Am searching for family of Mary Jessy CARRELL, b. 1872, probably in WI, m
John B. WHITE (Jean Baptiste LEBLANC of St. Anicet, Quebec) and relocated to
WA and OR by following the northern U.S. timberline. She bore 10 children,
the first 2 or 3 in WI. She died in 1913 at her home in Washington Co., OR.
The family was Catholic.
Would appreciate any help.

WELCOME, Don and Mary, and Happy Hunting.
Do you you have a location in Pennsylvania or some dates you could
share with us?
I have searched for my Alexander Carrell/Carrol/Curle for so long,
I will try to match with any spelling anywhere west of the Atlantic
Ocean. He first appeared in Sampson County, NC April 7, 1783, when he
and Lucy Royal/Ryal were married.
I think some Carrels were in that area in 1790 who had come from
nothern VA or MD, so why not PA?

Hi Don & Mary,
Do you have some dates for your CARROLLS and
maybe a little more info regarding parents and children.
We could all then search our files and see if there are
any matches.
Thanks, and welcome to the list!!

Our Carroll (Carrell) line came from Pennsylvania to Ohio to Illinois. The
two prominent names were James Carrell and John Carrell. The last James
Carrell married Ellen Loughrey in Pennsylvania, then moved to Ohio, then
Bureau/Henry Counties Illinois.
Don and Mary in Wyoming
Hi Judith:
This is an interesting query - I read every posting to our List and as Listowner
also receive and read every post to each of our seven CARROLL bulletin boards.
I don't really know how many variations there are in the spelling of this surname.
Most of these vaiations occured as a result of the illiteracy of many people in
those early years. In my Pallardy family, for example, I find such variations as
Palardi, Palardy, Pallardie, Palardie, etc. within my direct line of ancestors.
Since this line was Catholic and most of the information came from the various
church records, it appeared that every priest spelled the name just as it
sounded to them, as you would expect. This also holds true for other surnames.
My wife, who is the CARROLL in our family, and I have just purchased a fascin-
ating little book, "Viginia CARROLL and Their Neighbors" which lists a number
of her ancestors with every possible spelling of the name - all for the same reason -
other people spelled it on a document as it sounded to them.
So, the message is " don't think that the current spelling of the surname you're
researching today is necessarily the way it was 100 or 200 years ago - it's very
possibly changed, perhaps several times, over the years".
Because of the timeframe of interest in your research, I think census indexes
and perhaps Catholic church records might be very likely sources of information.
