Hi,
I've been looking for service or pension records for my great-great-grandfather
James CARROLL, who according to family legend was a drummer boy in the Union
Army. We have found service records for three of his brothers, who all enlisted
in 1863, when James would have been 12. If he did serve, he would likely have
served in either a regiment from Ohio (where the brothers grew up) or
Pennsylvania (the older brothers were all attending Jefferson Medical College in
Philadelphia when the war broke out, and later settled in Philadelphia, and
James was living in the same house with them in 1867). NARA said there are too
many James Carrolls in either state for them to send records. I'm hoping to
search the records in person next summer when I can travel to DC.
On the hunch that I had found the right James Carroll, I sent for a pension
file, but it was not our James Carroll. This James J. Carroll was from
Kittatinney and served in Co. A of the 78th Pennsylvania infantry. He died of
wounds received at the Battle of Stones River (Murfreesboro) on 24 January 1863.
His mother, Nancy Carroll, received a pension. His widow was Mary Jane HILL
Carroll.
I'll send my copy of this pension file to anyone who can make use of it.

Hi Everyone,
I'm writing to let you know that the DURHAM, NC list has been
resurrected, I think. I was somehow able to join it even though it is
not listed at Rootsweb. I think there are only a handful of people
on the list as we have been e-mailing each other wondering if there
were others on the list. So please, If you have connections in this
area please join the list.
Send a blank e-mail with the word subscribe as the only text to
ncdurham-1-request(a)rootsweb.com for the mail mode or
ncdurham-d-request(a)rootsweb.com for the digest mode.
Hopefully, this will work. If not I will inquire with other list members
as to how to get this thing going again. There is no list master, so
we're not sure how our messages are being posted.
Thanks,
Katherine White-Duke
I have two ancestors who served in the AMERICAN SPANISH WAR at the end of
the last century. Does anyone know how I can find any information on people
who served in this war, or even what this war was all about? I presume they
signed up after a recruitment drive, and I wondered which barracks they
would have been posted to. They lived in NEWBURGH Orange County NY and
served in the army for two years. There seems to be lots of web links for
information on every other war except this one. Any help would be
appreciated. With regards to all. Barbara(a)barwhites.demon.co.uk
Read this everyone. The Civil War Medals sight that I posted the
other day has helped at least one person track down an ancestor,
so everyone please post any sites of interest that may help another
list member.
Thanks,

Katherine,
The subject link turned out to be of interest. My mother's side of the
family, from WV fought on the union side. The county the family came from
had about an equal number of union and C. S. A. volunteers. My great grand
father had not collected his medal from the state, I plan to.
Thanks again, you have found some interesting and useful links.

Hi Looking for info on Charles Carroll of NY Father Samuel Carroll and
Alice Buchanan.I believe Samuel Came from Ireland but not yet proven.
Charles is said to have lived also in MI part of the time. Anyone
related to this very difficult line? any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for information on Rosanna (Rozana) Carroll who married
Charles H. West on October 31, 1861 in Scott County, Tennessee, according to
"Scott County, Tennessee Marriages 1854-1880". He filed for divorce in
December 1866 charging adultery (no man named) according to "Scott County,
Tennessee DIVORCES 1850-1910". I believe that this Charles West was my
great grandfather, son of Polly West, although he had divorced Rosanna by
the time my grandmother, Arbanna, was born in 1868. There were so many
Charles West in Scott County around this time it is really hard to be sure
who is who. Any information on Charles and Rosanna would be greatly
appreciated. The above is all the information I have on Rosanna.
Thanks,

As usual, correspond directly with the sender.

For Max Carroll:
Would you please publish any information about Absolum Carroll who is
buried in York, S. C. Since the Carrolls aparently recycled given names, it
would be of great help in establishing whether he is "our" Absolum. Thanks,
