greetings from California,
Have very little information to go on other than the Carroll line we are
researching begins with an unknown Carroll who came from Kansas,
married a woman who was also from Kansas[?] had four children,3 girls & 1
son.1 of the daughters married a politician and had at least 1 child,
another daughter married a contractor and had at least 1 child.
The son was in the Army in the early 1940's ,and we think the youngest
child was a girl by the name of Ethel Carolyn born in Missouri in 1923
who may have married a Clinton Levi Warehime in Arizona in the Early
1940's.
The Sr. Carroll worked for the railroad as a gang-foreman and died sometime
in 1930.
Hope this rings a bell with someone out there and we can fill in some
bare spots.

The earliest record of the Carroll family that we have is of my
Great great grandfather, Ferdinand Carroll, who was born in Cavan County, in
northern part of Ireland in the year 1751. He was the youngest of a large
family and was born after the death of his father.
In his boyhood he was sent to live with a rich uncle in London, but a fellow
traveler stole all his clothing, except what he was wearing, and not wanting
to go to his uncle as a begger, he apprenticed himself to a weaver and served
seven years to learn this trade.
At the age of twenty-three years Ferdinand was married to Isabella Johnston,
to whom were born six sons and six daughters, one son and two daughters dying
young.
The two oldest sons, Samuel and George, when of age, were determined to leave
their native land and go to America. The Ferdinand said, " If you go, let us
all go together." So selling his life lease of land for gold enough to pay
their expenses to America and something over, they embarked at Dublin in the
Spring of 1801 in an old war vessel for New York. The ship had two hundred
passengers on board.
Their youngest daughter, Isabella, died with the measles and was buried at
sea.
The vessel wass a sailing boat and was eight weeks making the voyage and
landed at New Castle Delaware instead of New York. Ferdinand could play the
violin, with which, by permission of the captain, who was a tyrant, relieved
the monotony of the long voyage.
The captain would go below with his cat-o-nine tails and lash the passagers
up on deck, saying , "go air yourselves, you lazy dogs." The captain came
across two or three feather beds out on dock, which belonged to the Carroll
family and kicked one overboard. The progress of the ship was so slow that it
could be seen from from the ship all day. The captain was arrested for cruelty
on arriving in America.
Soon after their arrival the Carroll family started for Chillicothe , Ohio.
On reaching Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania they heard of fever and ague at
Chillicothe, so halt was made.
The inducement, held out by Holland Land Company, of one hundred acres free
for making settlement and staying five years on it. took the family's
attention. This land was on a creek, a tributary of the Allegheny River, about
one hundred miles north of Pittsburgh.
Ferdinand and his two oldest sons, Samuel and George, started up Allegheny
River to Franklin, Pennsylvania, and up French Creek and Little French Creek
To Union Mills. About two miles south of Union Mills he found Andrew Hasley on
track 159 of the Holland Land Company's land and bought his right of
settlement and improvements for thirty dollars in gold. Andrew Hasley went
back east of the Allegheny mountains whence he came.
The next thing Ferdinand did was move his Family and few belongings from
Pittsburgh to Hasley Castle as he called the one-story built of poles that
Hasley had erected. Their few possessions were brought on pack horses, the
family walking, arriving at the Castle in the fall of 1801. Ferdinand
completed the settlement of Tract 159 and got a clear deed for this one
hundred acre tract.
He left this property to his youngest son, William, who left it to his
youngest living son, George W. Carroll.
On arriving at Hasley Castle in 1801 Ferdinand was fifty years old, his
living children were Samuel, twenty-five; George, twenty-two; Phoebe,
seventeen; Jane fifteen; Elizabeth, thirteen; Mary, eleven;
James, nine; Thomas, seven years oldWilliam, five years old.
Ferdinand Carroll was born in 1751, died 2-1-1831, age 80 years. His wife,
Isabella was born 1755, died 9-28-1830. They were buried in the Thompson
burying ground in in the south part of Union City, Pennsylvania. Their
tombstones are native sandstone. the inseriptions are crudely cut, but are
plain and legible now in 1937.
At his death Ferdinand left this farm to his youngest son, William, who
lived there all his life. leaving it to his youngest son, George W. Carroll,
who build and operated a cheese factory there for many years. I hauled milk
there three summer in 1876,1877, and 1878.
The stones that were the fireplace and chimney in "Hasley Castle" are still
there, where the castle stood. This farm is now owned by O.W. Carroll, a
grandson of Thomas Carroll, Son of Ferdinand.

Hi. I am looking for information on James Edward Carrell
(7/6/1847-6/6/1928). I know that he moved from Louisville, Kentucky
in 1875 to Cocke County, Tennessee where he spent the rest of his
life. I know his parent's names were Edward and Nancy Carrell. I
asume that they were in Kentucky(?). James married Matilda Brooks in
Cocke County, TN on 1/29/1878. They had a son named Edward
Carrell(8/17/1890-?). Thanks for any help that you can give me with
this branch of the Carrell family.
Tina
I am searching for a Daniel Anderson Carroll who was married to Gretta May Ellsworth and had a son Earl Clyde Carroll who was born in Memphis, Tn in 1907-1908. His Carroll Clan may have been from Tn or Pa.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Last year I located the cemetery of my maternal ggfather Mark Carroll and
other Carroll and Daniel relatives; a private cemetery on someone's private
farm. It is about 1/3 of an acre and was filled with thick briars which had
grown to about 10 feet tall making it impossible to get into.
This is in Dickson Co. TN and is in the path of a proposed Interstate route. I
had heard (true) horror stories about cemeteries in Clarksville being razed by
bulldozers (unlawfullly) during construction of homes and vandalized by
homeowners using the markers as stepping stones. I elected to take on the
responsibility of not letting this happen to this cemetery. I am also having
to document this cemetery with the Dept of Transportation so they will
document it on their maps and take the necessary steps to protect it from the
bull dozers. Keeping the cemetery fenced and maintained is one way to protect
it from vandals.
I spent some time cleaning out a section to see some markers and quickly
realized I was not in condition to clean out 1/3 acre of tall briars. So I
hired someone at a bargain price of $240 to clean it out and paid him myself.
He did it in his spare time and took several months but did a great job. Now I
am paying him $20 per month to go in once a month and use a weed eater to keep
the weeds down.
Now I am ready to begin the process of trying to get other descendants to help
me with this cost.
I haven't asked so far, but I have discussed what I have done, and the expense
involved, to a couple of relatives and so far no one has volunteered to help
me, so I will have to ask. I can understand that someone would not volunteer,
especially if they have no interest in genealogy further back than a relative
which they knew personally. However, I would think that any person who has an
interest in genealogy would be willing to help pay for the up keep for graves
of their beloved ancestors whom they have spent so much time in locating.
If I were to receive a bill such as the one described above, I would
investigate it and determine who owns the property the graves are on; that the
graves are actually there with markers; that they are actually being
maintained on an ongoing basis; what the cost is; determine if that cost is
competitive; who contracted for the maintenance; who has been paying for the
maintenance; and who is doing the work.
I would ask the person in charge for the name of the person who had been
paying the bill, and who else was contributing. (This could lead to new
contacts with relatives who have a lot of genealogical information about that
family to share.) Then I would begin to look for interested relatives who
would help with the expenses and agree to begin to pick up a pro-rata share of
the expenses from the date that I located the graves sites. (A 6 grave site
can be tended to in just a few minutes on an ongoing basis and should not
total over about $5 to $20 per month, depending on if this is a plot in an
established cemetery, or a plot on a private farm that takes some time to get
to.) $5 to $20 per month shared by several relatives seems to be a small price
to pay to keep the sites of beloved ancestors in a respectable state.
I would not agree to any retroactive fees. If they have continued to clean the
site without compensation, then they did it knowing they may not be paid. It
does not seem logical that any legal system will obligate descendants to be
responsible for cemetery maintenance fees. However, a trip to the law library
can determine that.
In private cemeteries, which is what this seems to be, someone has to pay for
maintenance, and since the interred obviously can't pay, then I believe it
becomes a moral obligation of descendants to help keep the sites clean, either
by furnishing the labor, tools, or funds.
The genealogist would be doing a great service, and would be personally
rewarded by adding the project of getting together a group of people willing
to pick up the tab of maintaining cemeteries of their ancestors (from the time
they are discovered). Charting the cemetery and giving the local library the
information for others to see may also bring other relatives into contact who
would probably be willing to help with the expenses.
There is another private cemetery in Dickson where my paternal gfather,
gmother and ggrandfather and mother are buried. This cost is shared among
quite a few of the descendants and no one complains.
In a few months I'll share the results of my asking for funds to help with
this cemetery maintenance.
I would be interested in hearing the results of the fund solicitation that was
mentioned in the above referenced mail.

To All Carroll Researchers;
I have found that no one can really trace a Family Tree, without the help of
many other people. When I first started with the Ferdinand and Isabella
(Johnstone) Carroll family. I had about 500 descendants, Now with the efforts
of many other, I now have close to 2000 descendants, With many other
descendants missing. It is not that I want to take claim to the time and
efforts of other Carroll researcher on their descendants or any personal gain
from this. It is a love of Genealogy, I find it rewarding. To find another
line that is connected to this family is a joy and more rewarding then words
can say. And to think that 2 people (Ferdinand & Isabella Carroll) started
this family so many years ago, from a family of 9 living Children to almost
2000 descendants. I want to share all the Genealogy that I have with other
researchers. And I hope they will share their with me. Do the fact that
there are many of the Descendants living and their dates of birth, Are in my
database. I will not send their Info. without asking their Permission.

I am hoping someone can do a lookup for me either in the Griffiths or
Tithes.
I am looking for a William Carroll b 1817 In tipperary Ire. It is
possible he was baptized in 18 Jan 1818 Newport Rc Parish, Tipp <IRE.
He married a woman named Elizabeth Ann Tracy from Tipp IRE.
He came to Canada in about 1843-1844, and had 5 children: 2 in Toronto,
1 in Stratford and 2 in Hamilton.
he then came to the US through IL.
They settled in leavenworth Co. KS.
He married again to a Jane Miller who when he died married a McCormick.
They had 2 more children in KS.
Anything on Newport and the RC parish in the area and any info on births
at that parish would be helpful.
One researcher said he was the son of Patrick Carroll and Ellen
Cantilon.
Please help , I at a dead end here??????

A few days ago, I had a letter from Marybeth...and then my answer

Question re: cemetery fees

Clare,
I am flabbergasted by something that come in my snail mail today.
Listen to
this one!
<<Freepost Cemetery
Inc. 1864
Freepost, PA
July 6, 1998
Mary Beth Corrigall
[address deleted]
Dear Mrs. Corrigall:
I have located a Frederick and Theresia Stanick in the Freeport Cemetery
on
lot F-20. This is a six grave lot with the perpetual care being owed at
the
rate of $70.00 per grave or $420.00 on the lot. Your help in this
matter will
be appreciated.
Sincerely,
(signed)

What do you think?? Have you ever seen this before?? These two
individuals
are my paternal gggrandparents, and I have been trying to locate their
burial
for abt. 10 years. I posted a query on the PAARMSTR list, seeking info
on
their burial, and I heard back from someone (don't have the email in
front of
me) saying that Frederick was buried in the Freeport Cemetery. So I
called
the cemetery, left a message on their voicemail, heard back from a Mr.
Francis
Laube yesterday, Mon. July 6, and lo-and-behold in today's mail this
letter
arrives. I'm very glad to know where they are buried, but am "shocked"
to see
this kind of response!!!!!
I'd love to hear from you about this; I know what my husband will say
"we're
not paying that kind of money". Is this some kind of 'angle' to get
money for
the cemetery, or what?
Thanks for your help.
Marybeth Corrigall, in Ohio
ACMBJC(a)aol.com
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Marybeth,
Nope, it's not an angle. That's your current bill for maintaining that
grave site. What happens is, the person who is in charge of paying the
cemetery bill dies or just stops paying, and the gravesite reverts to
the cemetery. They can't un-bury anyone but they can stop maintaining
the site [mowing, etc.]. Since you've now shown up and are a descendant,
I guess technically you "own" that plot and they now want their money.
I've handled this by ignoring the bill. We couldn't handle paying it at
the time and I just let it go. I would expect if you just ignore it you
wont hear anymore about it, but if you do, you'll want to consult
someone...maybe the state Cemetery Association? or a lawyer? to see
what your liability is. I do think this would be a good subject for the
list. May I send your letter on? I've written about this in the past,
warning people what might happen if they contact the cemetery.

Hi!
Today in an email Clare informed me that Lineages, Inc. is a
professional search service. Well, today's snail-mail backs that up
(not that I doubted you Clare, Neat coincidence don't you think?) and I
thought I would share some information with you that you may not be
aware of. The following comes from the Late Summer Brochure of Lineages,
Inc.
Lineages Search Options:
Ancestral File Searches:
Cost $3.50 per ancestor. The Ancestral File contains 14 million names
linked into families and pedigrees. You are paying for the time it
takes to search the record, not for access to the Ancestral file.
Single State IGI Search:
Complies information about everyone by a particular surname? The
current release of the IGI lists over 160 million entries. Order a
single state IGI search and receive photcopies of every entry for one
surname in that state. Copy costs exceeding $1.00 for each name/state
combination will be billed upon completion of your search. Common
surnames may be an additional cost, but the search fee is $5.00 per
surname/state.
Regional IGI Search:
Uncertain of the states or counties where your ancestors lived in the
U.S., England, Scotland, or Germany? The International Genealogical
Index lists over 160 million entries. You can order a special regional
search of the IGI and receive photocopies of every entry for one surname
in a particular region.
Region 1 = MA/CT/RI/ME/NH/VT and the cost is $24.00.
Region 2 = NY/PA/NJ/MD/DEL and the cost is $24.00
Region 3 = VA/WVA/NC/SC/FL/GA and the cost is $24.00
Region 4 = KY/TN/AL/MS/LA and the cost is $20.00
Region 5 = OH/IN/MI/WI/MN/both Dakotas' and the cost is $20.00
Region 6 = IL/IA/MO/AK/KA/NB and the cost is $18.00
Region 7 = TX/OK/NM/AZ/CA/NV and the cost is $15.00
Region 8 = CO/WY/UT/MT/OR/WA/ID and the cost is $15.00
Region 9 = All Counties in ENGLAND - $100.00
Region 10= All Counties in IRELAND - $50.00
Region 11= All Principalities in GERMANY $30.00

I am trying to locate any information on MICHAEL, EDWARD, OR MARGARET CARROLL.
Since Margaret's maiden name was Carroll when she wed Edward Carroll, I am not
sure if Michael was her or his sibling. In a letter to her, he calls her his
dear sister, so I am assuming she is his sibling.
I know Michael arrived in Australia, c.1840, at about 20 years old. He became
an experienced cattled man and had modest success as a gold miner, before
arriving in Mackay, Australia in 1866. He then purchased property and became
a sugar cane plantation. He married (but I don't know her name) and he had a
daughter, Sarah Mary, who attended convent school near Sydney in 1879 (the
time of the letter I have). He was definitely a devout man. The local books
say his family was from County Carlow, Ireland, however he named his
plantation, Miclere (after the gold mine in Clermont, Australia, & a favorite
place in Ireland). In fact in his letter he spelled it MiClare. So I
wondered if his family could also have been from County Clare.
EDWARD AND MARGARET CARROLL, were married in Washington, D.C. He & she were
to be from Dublin, Ireland (though that could be where they sailed from).
They had 6 children, though the first 4 died on or about their births. The
other two were JOSEPHINE & WINIFRED. Josephine married TIMOTHY DAVID
FENNESSY, in 1890. She died in Bronx, NY. in 1946.
If any of these names or dates ring a bell with you, please contact me. Or if
you just have some input into my searching my Irish roots, I would be
greatful.
Sincerely, Gerry Schipper
Trying to trace any information re my grandfather and his relations.
The details I have on my gf are that he was born 4 May 1889 to George Robert
Carroll and Harriet Mary Anne Carroll. He was baptised in Molyneux church,
St Brides Parish, Dublin.
I know I now need to try and find birth/marriage certificates for his
parents to get further but wondered if anyone else knew these names out
there.
Any information appreciated.
Thanks
Andrea
Hello All,
I seem to be at a brick wall with my ggg grandparents John Wilson
Carroll and Francis Franklin and any help would be appreciated.
I have the Widow Claim for Pension which states John Wilson Carroll,
volunteered in North Carolina to serve 18 months in War of 1812 under a
Captain Twiggs of the 8th NC Infantry. He was discharged in Savannah, GA
12-1813 and married Francis (Fanny) Franklin 1-8-1814 in SC by a Justice
of the Peace Squire Kidd. Family lore says that they eloped to SC from
GA as she was only 14 and her parents objected to marriage. The Widow
Claim states that they moved SC to GA to TN to KY to IN to KY and used
Land Grant to settle first in Larue Co.,KY. The Larue Co.,KY 1850 census
states his and her birth state as NC but in a later census her birth
state is GA.
The children of John and Francis Franklin Carroll were:
Eligah Alewine-1815
Evaline-1821
Francis Mahala-1822
Delilah-1825
John Miles-1827
Eliza-1829
William Albert-1831
Elbert Franklin-1833
Amanda-1837
Tyler Wilson(Saul)-1840
Jack-???
Thank you for your time.

Looking for information on my Carroll line:
WILLIAM CARROLL, cousin to CHARLES CARROLL of Carrollton, was
a Romanist (Roman Catholic) until he was 40 years old. He then joined
the Presbyterian
church. His wife, Mary Lynn, and he had 10 children one of whom was
born in Fayette county PA. Daniel Lynn Carroll b. 5/10/1797 in Fayette
county PA d. 11/23/1851 in Philadelphia
If William was a cousin to Charles Carroll of Carrollton then William's
father/mother and Charles' father, Charles, must have been siblings,
and most probably brothers.
Any information on Charles Carroll of Carrollton's pedigree/lineage
would be helpful.
Thank you,
Myra Carroll
