Lura and others:
Sorry, I have been away for a while and am just checking messages on this
subject. I, for what ever reason had not uploaded my gedcom file to Family
Tree, although I had put my ancestor file on the Carroll DNA project. I did
it this morning in less than five minutes. It was relatively easy. I use
Legacy as my genealogy program.
Charles, one comment on the DNA data and project. I am sorry that the
project has not been worth your money. I know that you are a serious
researcher and your input to me has been invaluable; however, I did not know
who my ggrandfather was. This Carroll DNA project was INVALUABLE to me. So
the money put in by you and others have GREATLY helped me.
I remain hopeful that we will find matches some day that will carry us
beyond the Duplin/Sampson county North Carolina area and time frame.

Subject: [CARROLL-DNA] How I Uploaded a GEDCOM file using Family Tree
Maker10
I apologize for posting so many letters, and I will soon stop for
a while to do other things life requires - like MAYBE moving to a
senior apartment.
Since several are asking me for help off the list, I'm sending
the directions for what I did. I don't know your genealogy
program, so this may not work for you. Unless I am sitting at
your desk with your computer using your software, there is no way
I can tell you exactly how to upload a GEDCOM file.
A GEDCOM file is a file created by a genealogy software program
that can be imported into another genealogy program. It is a
language that most programs understand. After you create the
file, it has a .ged extension.
I use Family Treemaker 10. I could not share files with a person
who uses Legacy, Master Genealogist, or another software program
unless I first 'translate' my data into a language that program
can understand. Someone had the foresight to develop the GEDCOM
file for that purpose. It doesn't always transfer everything,
but it does a pretty good job. I don't know all the bells and
whistles, but that isn't necessary for this anyway transfer
anyway.
All I know to do is tell you what I did in Family Tree Maker 10.
**First, in the genealogy software program I went to the name of
my cousin who contributed the DNA.
**Next, I created an Ancestor Tree that went back to the very
earliest ancestor.
**I chose the standard format - the most simple tree.
**I chose to include in that tree: birth, marriage, and death -
just the dates, no location or comment
**With that showing on the screen, I went to the top menu and
selected FILE > "Copy/Export Individuals in Ancestor Tree"
**That opened a dialog box that wanted me to provide a name for
the file.
**I typed in a NAME for the file and clicked the arrow to bring
down a drop-down menu of EXTENSIONS. If I didn't change the
extension, it would have added. FTW by default. I didn't want
that.
**I chose GEDCOM(*.GED)
**I Clicked SAVE. Then it asked me to make some choices about
what kind of file I wanted to create. I left the default
settings. Using a different software program, the default
settings might be different and perhaps would need to be changed.
I'd leave the default for the first try.
**I chose where it was going to store my file on the hard drive,
so I would know where to go find it when I got back to FTDNA.
**Then I closed the Family Tree Maker program.
**Next, I went to my cousin's personal website at FTDNA
**Under TOOLS, I clicked on "GEDCOM - Family Tree"
**Under where it said "Upload a Y-DNA file" I clicked "Browse"
and found the file on my hard drive
**When I had the correct file in the box, I clicked "Upload"
There were some choices to be made after I uploaded. I can't see
them again to tell you the exact wording, but I know there was a
place that said no one born after 1905 would have the name posted
unless I changed the setting to allow that. I left that setting
as it was,
so no one born after 1905 would be named in the pedigree shown.
There was another button to click to put the pedigree into the
"matches", but I don't remember just how it was labeled.
That is the total amount of help I can offer on that subject. I
do hope someone might benefit from it.
