A few years ago I had the difficult task of telling an elderly
gentleman that a few things in the genealogy he had worked so
hard to prepare were not found to be true with the more modern
ways of research. I respected the hard work he had done and did
not want to hurt his feelings.
After much thought and prayer, I told him something that I think
might be applicable here. "If I learn my ancestors were less
than perfect, that doesn't change who they helped me to become."
If someone learns he is descended from this Willis, I think he
will remain the same person he is now.
Hardy Carroll, who served in the regular army in the Revolution
out of Duplin/Sampson Co, NC, had a son named Willis according to
those researching this family. I don't think they know what
happened to him. This Hardy was probably an uncle or cousin of
my ancestor.
To add a little more mystery, I would like to know about a man
named Hardy Carroll who was hanged for stealing a set of
suspenders in Franklin Co, NC in 1845. See:
http://www.ncgenweb.us/newhanover/misc/ncexecutions.htm
The reason I am interested is because my own ancestor, Major
Hardy Carrell (son of Alexander and grandson of Dempsey, Sr.) was
possibly related to him. I make that statement because of the
number of times the name "Hardy" was used in my family, and
because Louisburg in Franklin County, NC was not far from
Sampson/Duplin, NC where my Major Hardy was reared. Read how
this Hardy's hanging affected the criminal code of NC.

Yes, Marshall, I'd admit it.
BTW - If Willis turns out to be related to me, doesn't the DNA
say that makes him just a little bit related to you also?? :-)
