Hi Peter,
I too would like to welcome you to the group! I read with interest your
message of introduction, since both you and I have O'Carroll ancestors in
Ireland. I hope you do join us by taking part in DNA testing. I did so a
couple of years ago when I found a gentleman living in County Meath Ireland
whose ancestors were from the same townland as mine. His surname is
O'Carroll, and we matched perfectly on the DNA Heritage 43 marker test.
He's been able to track his branch of the family back to the early 1800s,
but I haven't been quite so successful. Unfortunately, we still haven't
found that common ancestor.
As far as I've been able to determine, our Carroll (O'Carroll) ancestors
were "removed" from their lands near Abbey Leix in the 1600s, and travelled
to the area near Virginia, County Cavan. It's from there that my branch of
the family emigrated to Minnesota, USA in the late 1800s.
Once again, welcome, and good luck with your research!
Mike Carroll

Subject: [CARROLL-DNA] Introduction
Hello all,
I've just joined the list, so I'll briefly introduce myself: my name is
Peter Carroll, I live in England and I'm trying to trace my family back to
the original Irish clan (sept). According to family tradition my ggg
grandfather, Edward Carroll, left Ireland for Wales in 1847 having
suffered from 'fever', dropping the 'O' prefix from his surname into the
Irish Sea on the way over; a second cousin of my father remembers her
grandfather (one of Edward's grandsons) talking about the 'tribes of
Ireland' but cannot remember any more than that; and Edward's father,
John, is meant to have come from Co. Tipperary. This all this seems to
hint at a descent from the O'Carrolls of Ely O'Carroll, but the paper
trail seems to have come to an end with my gggg grandfather. I'm hoping
that using DNA will either prove or disprove this theory.
I have a solid paper trail back to my ggg grandfather, Edward Carroll, who
was born in Co. Clare in 1824, and I know that his father was John
Carroll, a carpenter and shopkeeper. Briefly the line from John to myself
is as follows:
John Carroll; presumably b. before 1810 in Ireland (possibly Co.
Tipperary)
Edward Carroll; b. 24 Nov. 1824, R.C. Parish of Liscannor, Co. Clare,
Ireland
Edwin Carroll; b. 22 Jul. 1849, Pontantwn, Carmarthenshire, Wales
Thomas John Carroll; b. 1 Aug. 1880, Llandaff, Cardiff, Wales
James Edwin Carroll; b. 31 Dec. 1911, Gateshead-on-Tyne, England
M. Carroll; b. 1937, Glamorgan, Wales
Peter Carroll (myself); b. 25 Apr. 1963, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England
In the new year (when there are less demands on my coffers) I plan to join
the Carroll DNA Project. I find it very exciting to think that this
new
area of genealogy might possibly answer a question which I thought I'd
never know the answer to, and maybe even uncover a few new distant cousins
in the process. In the meantime I'm trying to get my head around
how this
whole DNA thing works.
Peter.
