Lura,
And she was "a virulent anti-catholic writer"? That must not have gone
down too well with the Maryland Carrolls she was closely related to.. It's
good you found her parents. Although she apparently never married, she
still may connect to some present day Carrolls. I wouldn't mind having her
in my family tree.
Here's another early Carroll, a Yankee. I have been searching for years
for any genealogical information on him. He may be the father of my
earliest known Carroll ancestor, Philip Carrel / Carroll born about 1775.
The Marblehead Militia of Foot, with whom he served, composed of
Massachusetts men of the sea, fishermen, is shown elsewhere to be the
actual men who rowed Washington across the Delaware in 1776. Although he
does not appear on the muster roll of Valley Forge, ten other Carrolls do,
and four from Virginia. See

"I am seeking any records, b.m.d. etc. for PHILIP CARROLL in Essex County,
Province of Massachusetts Bay. There are at least two of them, possible
related: 1) Sergeant Philip Carroll who served under Colonel John Glover
in The Marblehead Militia of Foot, 1775+; and 2) Philip Carroll born 19
June 1778 in Newburyport, Essex, MA."
Sources:
1) A ROLL of the field, staff, and company officers, non-commissioned
officers and soldiers in the Twenty-first Regiment of Foot, in the service
of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, commanded by Col. John Glover.
COMPANY FOUR
Sergeant Philip Carroll
Found in a book at USIGS (United States Internet Genealogical Society)
library. "The History and Traditions of Marblehead" by Samuel Roads, Jr.,
1880. The entire book is online. The reference to Sergeant Philip Carroll
is in the Appendix.
2) Family History Library, LDS.

Thanks, Eric.
I'd never heard of Anna Ella Carroll, so I was glad to learn about her.
It's hard to get a true picture of folks of long ago. You
might want to look at her from a slightly different viewpoint in
Britannica.
http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9020516
I'm not as interested in what she did or didn't do as I am in her
genealogy
- as I am any of these early Carrolls. According to the
article, "she was closely related to the famous Carrolls of
Carrollton."
I searched and found that her father was Thomas King
Carroll (April 29, 1793 - October 3, 1873) who married Julia
Stevenson,
the daughter of Dr. Henry Stevenson and Anne Henry.
Thomas King Carroll was born in Dorchester County, Maryland to Henry
James Carroll
and Elizabeth Barnes King. I did not find dates
for Henry James, but using the 25 year estimate, he may have been
born
about 1768, making him perhaps one generation younger than CC
of C.
I'm still wondering how much truth was in the book I wrote to James about
yesterday. Just how many Carrolls are related to CC of
C??? I hope this DNA project will help find answers to that
question.
