Dear Jeff Jernegan,
I'll try a few of your questions and let someone else do part of them.
1. Which testing lab to use?
I am not affiliated in any way with any of these labs, but I believe FamilyTreeMaker would
be my choice. They have probably done
more tests than all the other labs. Right now they have 58,280 Y-DNA samples with which
to compare your results, and they will
write you directly and tell you if they find a match (if you tell them to do that when you
send in the sample).
2. Which test to use?
You would want to do a Y-DNA test. Yesterday FTDNA (FamilyTreeDNA) added a new test which
will test for 59 markers. I don't know
much about it yet, but as part of the Carroll Project at
http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=F25174&special=True
the cost is $269. My advise to anyone would be to order that one if at all possible. See
the drop down menu at the bottom of the
page at the site above for other prices. I would definitely order the Y-DNA37 for $189 if
not able to get the Y-DNA59. The Y-DNA12
will only tell about your very ancient past and nothing about the last 500 years or so.
My cousin, for whom I am the contact
person, has 102 perfect matches on 12 markers - only two of them are Carrolls. The others
are probably very distant relatives
before the use of surnames began around 1300 A.D. If you want to get the Y-DNA37 now, you
can have alleles 38-59 added later at a
cost of $109 (perhaps a little less ? by ordering through Kevin Carroll, the project
administrator). No one in the Carroll project
has done the 59 marker test yet, unless it was ordered today.
Now someone else jump in here.... Maybe you prefer a different lab...

Subject: Re: [CARROLL-DNA] Please explain CARROLL testing choices
: Dear Eric & others,
:
: I am a direct Carroll male descendant (my last name changed 2 generations
: ago when a Carroll stepson adopted his stepfather's name). I have a solid
: Carroll genealogy back to c 1819 in Philadelphia & NY. I am very interested
: in trying to trace my Carrolls back into Ireland from whence they came. (Its
: hard to jump the pond to the old country ancestors)
:
: I need some direction/suggestion regarding:
:
: which testing lab to use - are they of equal quality/cost?
: which test(s) to choose - which produce useful results for matching common
: ancestors back 6-8 generations ago
: what results I will get (from differnt labs) - will they all be in a
: standard format I can upload or contribute to all databases?
: where to post the results - what databases will reach most other Carroll
: investigators for mutual comparison?*
:
: -test cost is a factor, I prefer not to overspend unnecessarily
: -usefulness and accessability of results now and in the future is a
: major factor
:
: Is there a web page that has all these explained in a FAQ? Would someone
: like to write one?
:
: Thank you all very much

:
: * I looked at FTDNA Carroll Project entry page and it is closed to
: non-participants - which limits its usefulness to other testees from other
: labs...???
