As I understand it, 12 markers tell you very little. That many
markers usually gives FTDNA enough information to estimate your
Haplogroup. That is a very ancient grouping of people on the
earth. R1b is the most predominate Haplogroup in Western Europe,
including the British Isles. As you can see there are some who
now spell their name Carroll who are not in the R1b Haplogroup.
I'm afraid there are going to be people who just test to 12
markers, and because they match perfectly with another CARROLL,
they think that proves they have a common ancestor. My Carroll
cousin, for whom I serve as the contact person, has 279 exact
matches at 12 markers. I know another person who has 475 perfect
matches on 12 markers.
The only time I can imagine 12 markers would be useful is to
prove that someone is NOT in the same family. If there are
several mutations between two men, one can assume they are not
closely related.
Maybe 3000 years ago ancestors of two men with a genetic distance
of 0 on 12 markers may have lived on the same hill. Surnames are
relatively new. When they first began in some areas everyone in
a certain area had the same name because the most powerful man in
the area was lord over all those serfs. In some areas the
surname indicated whose son or daughter the person was. In other
cases the name indicated the area where the person lived or the
occupation of the person, for example: taylor, weaver, cooper
(made barrels) SO, people who were related came to have
different surnames.

| You could see that you may be a match to others in the
data-base. That can
| lead to a lot of info.

| I am disappointed, with hope that someday I may have some
answers.
| I am also confused by the findings. If there were any findings
at all.
| To start
| with,in my case, My husband's grandfather was a mystery man who
left no
| paper trail
| to who he was. He was a drifter and probably an only child.
My son did the
| DNA test,
| so he would be generation ONE, my husband generation TWO, my
father in law
| three, mystery Grandfather Four who was probably an only child,
So the
| closest match may be the descendant of
| Generation five, six, seven or eight. What can I expect with a
match from
| that scenario?

| This mail list has been quiet for too long!
|
| I would like to know who has learned something about their
| ancestry because of the DNA test. Who has a success story to
| share?
|
| Who is totally confused by the results of the test?
|
| Who was disappointed when they saw the results?
|
| How can someone on this mail list help answer some of your
| questions?
