Charles,
If there were no CARROLL haplotypes like mine, I would be sure to
keep my "User Preferences" set to show those with different
surnames. Also, I would do a search at
YSearch.org often using
my YSearch ID#, not the surname. There is always the possibility
of a non-paternal event. Some people only think that means
illegitimate birth, but there are other reasons as well. I wrote
a letter this morning to a man in another surname whose
great-grandfather left his pregnant wife and never came back.
She remarried and the stepfather gave his name to her children.
I don't think an adoption took place legally. So this man
carries the DNA of one family and the surname of another. That
happened a lot, for many reasons. Pioneer families just "took in"
the children from other families who could not care for them. If
you find there are matches with another surname, but not with
Carroll, you might even want to check the census records to see
if there was a Carroll family with a close neighbor who had the
surname of the matching DNA. These ancestors were human!
I know a man who found a case just as I described above.
I hope you find a family for yourself.
Lura
