All should visit the site for Ely O'Carrols -

There is a lot of interesting information on that sept plus a listing of
surnames belonging thereto. Many would surprise you.

The Y-Chromosome DNA project for surname CARROLL includes variations
such as
Caryll, Karol, Caroll, Karel, Karrel, Carrol, Carrole, Carrell,
Carrel, Carill, Carrill, O'Carroll, O'Carrol, O'Carriel, etc.
Let's be careful to remember that not all of these surnames are Irish,
although perhaps the greater numbers are. For example the surname spelled
Carrel is found today in the Channel Island, in France, in Canton Berne
Switzerland, in the Ukraine, in the Czech Republic, and in Hungary, etc.
The spellings with "k" are of distinctly Eastern European origin. Karol
also translates to Charles in places such as Poland. Our current Pope was
born Karol Wojtyla. And there were many King Karols in the history of
Eastern Europe - in Poland, Hungary, Romania, etc.
In my Carroll family I find at least five different spellings before
1850, when
the spelling finally settled down to its current Carroll. The
earliest spelling seems to be Carl. then Carrel. then Carrol, etc. A lot
of this is because census takers and clerks often wrote down surnames
phonetically, as they heard them. What these different spellings all do
have in common, however, is Soundex C-640.
For those of you with returned Y-DNA results, be sure to check out the
expanded
Sorenson (beta) test database at
http://207.234.208.169:8085/<http://207.234.208.169:8085/> for matches.
