Lura,
I want to find out if any of the Carrolls that we are in touch with moved up
the great Cohairie Creek in the late 1700's, close to Newton Grove, N.C.
There were two Carroll families that moved up the Creek. My GGGgrandfather, John
W. Carroll was probably born into one of these families. John W. married a
Joyner (Joiner) which was also a familiar name in that area. So, if any of
you have ancestors that come from aroundNewton Grove, it may help us track down
my GGGGgrandfather!! I am getting the rootsweb address sent back to me. That
is why I send you this Lura, so you can pass it on. Rodger Carroll
Rodger,
I don't know anyone researching CARROLLS in the northern part of Sampson County except
you and Frank. Both of you are researching John W. CARROLL who married Elizabeth Joiner
and moved to Gibson County, TN, in 1848.
I suggest you try to learn which census district(s) covered the northern part of the
county in 1830 and 1840. See if you find CARROLL households there. Study the ages of the
male categories to find a household that has a male child or youth the right age for your
John W.
I think you already know that John Carroll moved up Big Coharie to that area in 1767,
according to the Sampson County Heritage Book, article # 530. I will continue to watch for
information for you.
Perhaps we will soon be aided by the DNA of at least 3 men. Just think so far there are a
total of nine Carrolls and three of them are from brick walls in Sampson County, NC. We
are going to knock down those walls.
