Subject: RE: [CARROLL] Re: James Carroll and Catherine Carroll
Lura,
Are you kidding? Yes I know of the depradations of the infamous Gustave
Anjou,
although I never knew he wrote about Carrolls. I have not read his
books, having been forwarned. Thank you for bringing that forward again.
Now as to my own research into the Maryland Carrolls, I willingly admit I
have NOT
gone to primary sources such as birth, marriage and death records.
I cannot speak for Marc Carroll. However I suggest many, many others have
done the research, and are published in places like the Catholic
Encyclopedia, various Carroll historic site museums, in addition to the
many books you name. I maintain a Charles Carroll of Carrollton GEDCOM
file, which I update as needed, such as in the present case of Marc's
comments. We seem to differ on who were Henry Carroll's parents, who died
at sea. Also the Catholic Encylopedia and other sources state that Charles
and Mary had seven children, not ten.
My mother's maiden name was Carroll, and like most all Carrolls in
America, her
family had a legend about being descended from Charles Carroll
of Carrollton. I believe I have disproved that legend as being impossible,
because the only male descendants of Charles Carroll of Carrollton were a
string of only sons, down to his only great grandson, Charles Carroll born
in 1828, who married Caroline Thompson. My Carroll ancestor Philip Carroll
was born about 1775. Any male Carroll descended from Charles Carroll of
Carrollton would have had to be born after 1848. QED
These are not my Carrolls. I don't believe we are even Irish. Our
Carroll /
Carrel Y-DNA results of Haplogroup R1a puts my Carrel ancestors
in Eastern Europe or Central Asia... I urge all Carrolls seriously
interested in their genealogy to join the Surname Carroll Y-DNA Project at
FamilyTreeDna. See
http://www.familytreedna.com/ to get started.

Carrollton from the original census records, land grants and deeds, tax

other people? If the latter, would you please share with us some of your
source material?

be not be based on fact. See:

the prominent colonial families to royalty and other respected individuals.
Many other people have based their genealogies on the families Mr. Anjou
falsified. I have wondered how much of what we now accept as fact about
the family of the early Carrolls of Maryland might have grown in the
imagination of Gustave Anjou. I wonder how many of the CARROLL books
written since then have accepted and quoted his material.

include the family of Charles Carroll of Carrollton are listed below. Many
of these are probably available other places. Also, it might be possible
to go to a local Mormon Family History library and read these books on
microfilm or DVD. I don't have other information about them other than I
found the list by searching at the LDS library.
