James,
I am forwarding your inquiry to the GENEALOGY-DNA-List, and to Kevin
Carroll, the Carroll Y-DNA Project Manager. You will find experts there
better able to answer your excellent questions than I am.
My first thought is that whatever Y-DNA testing may tell you, it is a male
to male thing only, independent of the wives. Y-DNA is passed along only
from father to son. Women do not have Y-DNA, so married twice does not
matter..
Unless and until a proven descendent of Carroll (O'Carroll) UiCearbhaill
kings of Oriel is Y-DNA tested, or if ancient Y-DNA can be isolated from
his grave remains, the answer may remain unknown. However if you have
male Carroll cousins thought to be descended from him and convince them to
also Y-DNA test, you may begin to find a possible family pattern in the
returned lab results, which might even help with your paper trail. In any
case, I strongly urge you to join the Carroll Y-DNA Project and be tested.
Knowledge is power....
Regards,
Eric Olson
