Subject: Re: [CARROLL-DNA] Ryall/Carroll Will in VA, 1709
Hi Eric,
Oh yes, I'm very much interested in that will! I'm pretty sure that
particular Thomas Ryal is my ggggggg-grandfather, and I know there have been
Carrolls all around the Ryal family since those early days. Basing on the
words of others, I have the Ryal lineage all the way down, but not the
Carrolls. There are so many conflicting stories in the family about the
Carrolls.
I have proof back to Alexander Carrell m.1783 in Sampson County, NC, and I
have a
pretty good theory that Dempsey Carrell, Sr. was his father. I
believe this Demcy was living beside John Ryal in Halifax County, NC before
coming to Sampson, and I think Demcy's son Alexander married John Ryal's
niece, Lucy Ryal. That's the way things often happened in those days.
Some of the I of W County, VA Carrolls came as far as Johnston County, NC,
but we
just can't seem to find proof that they came on down to Sampson
County. I know they did; we just can't prove it.
I seem stymied in my effort to get a DNA sample from Alexander's family. I
have
been away from genealogy for a while due to three visits in the
hospital this spring. Maybe I'll be able to get back to it a little more
now. If we can just get a proven DNA record from the I of W, VA Carrolls and
compare with the Sampson County, NC samples already profiled, maybe we can
prove the connection.
Do you have the Will of Thomas Ryal, or did you just run across an
abstract? If is
online, can you tell me where to find it? I'll be happy to
send you my snail mail address if you have it and would prefer to mail using
USPS.
Thank you so much. I skimmed across much material before I knew its
relevance. We
had always been told the name was Royal, so I didn't know to
even consider Ryal. I know now that one early record listed Ryle. I have
at least learned enough to know that any spelling is a possibility!
Thanks,
Lura

Lura,
I ran across this Will of Thomas Ryall, dated 1709 in Isle of Wight
County,
Virginia. It might be of interest to you because two of the
witnesses are John and Elizabeth Carroll. Ryall children named are
George, Charles, John and Isabel.
