You probably saw the following letter I just posted on the CARROLL
message board after the FTDNA Carroll project had been mentioned.
The theory of memory I learned as a teacher says that on the average a
child must hear something new 3 times before he begins to give
attention to it. It takes many more times for an adult to listen, and
then he only selects to listen to that which he thinks will be of help
to him personally. If we want more CARROLLS to send DNA samples, we
need to mention it as much as possible.
You see that I asked people to join this list and send their questions
to us. I think that is within the guidelines set down for this list
when it was begun since it states, "...is for the discussion and
sharing of information regarding the application of DNA testing to
genealogical research on surname Carroll and its variations..." I am
interpreting that to mean that a person does NOT have to have sent a
DNA sample in order to be on this mail list.
I don't want to do all the writing on this mail list. I expect you to
supply the answers to the questions that will be asked. I also
encourage you to ask the list your questions, tell us your needs, and
share your insights or frustrations about DNA. Questions of genealogy
lineage should relate somehow to those lines which have been tested or
might be tested.

:
: The descendant of this Britton/Burton (born SC in 1808) was a good
DNA match with descendants of 4 out of the 10 Carroll households
living in Sampson County, NC in the 1790 census and one other Carroll
born in Sampson County in 1799. It is not yet known how Burton is
related to the Sampson, NC Carrolls.
:
: The DNA profiles of these seven men are highlighted in orange in the
chart of the Carroll DNA Project at
:
http://www.childtalk.com/History/carrollfamilydnavalues.pdf
:
: Since several CARROLL, CARREL, CARROL, CARRELL family groupings are
developing, it should be easier now for a person to use DNA to trace
his CARROLL heritage.
:
: Only a man with the CARROLL surname (by any spelling) and who has no
adoption or non-paternal event in his lineage (as far as he knows)
should be tested for this project. I would encourage a person to
order either the Y-DNA37 or Y-DNA67 test at
:
https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=F25174&special=True
: or contact the Project Administrator, Kevin Carroll, at
kushtiqa(a)hotmail.com for more information.
:
: Ordering the Y-DNA12 test only tells one's very ancient background
and doesn't help find a lineage in the last few thousand years. The
Y-DNA25 test returns too many false positives and false negatives to
be of much help. It is more economical to do all the testing at once,
but it is possible to do a cheaper test, then upgrade later.
:
: I invite anyone who is interested in the Carroll DNA Project to join
the CARROLL-DNA(a)rootsweb.com mail list. Those on the mail list should
be able to help answer your questions.
