My husband is a descendant of Hardy Carroll in Duplin Co., NC.? He has tested for all 67
markers on FTDNA and it has been a very positive experience.? They even did a free
Haplotype since he didn't match any other Lawrences.? Just another person to recommend
them and their large database.

Thanks Lura..I was kind of leaning toward FTDNA for this guy too. I think
that's the direction I'll point him in.

Mike,
I hope Kevin Carroll will see this letter and answer.
I can honestly say that I don't know as much as I should about
DNA Heritage in order to give an unbiased answer, but I will try.
The CARROLL Project was established with FTDNA, so testing with
another laboratory does not have the advantage of being compared
in the charts with over 100 other Carroll men. DNA Heritage
indicated there were two members in their Carroll Project, but I
not find a way to view those results.
The present prices I found at DNA Heritage are
25 markers - $137.77
43 markers - $199
The Y-DNA37 at FTDNA is presently priced at $119 with an added
bonus of giving the mtDNA 22 marker test FREE.
Mike, it may have not been hard for you to translate the values
from DNA Heritage to enter them into YSearch, but for some it
would NOT an easy process. To compare a profile from one
laboratory to another is a little like trying to compare oranges
and apples. I have tried comparing with SMGF lab.
FTDNA has tested the Y-DNA of 157,555 men. I think that is far
more than any other lab, but I don't have information available
from the other labs to prove that.
I certainly would not try to tell a person where to send a DNA
sample, but if he wants to find CARROLL ancestry, I think FTDNA's
surname project is the best choice.

| Hi,
|
| Thanks for the info on the tests at FTDNA. I've been contacted
by a Carroll
| gentlem
an who plans to get tested very soon and is considering
the DNA
| Heritage 43 marker test. Do you have a preference for one
company over
| another? I too had gone with Heritage DNA, and have only had
to translate a
| few of the results to be included on YSearch and YBase. Any
information
| would be helpful. As I recall when I tested, Heritage DNA was
the less
| expensive, and tested more markers. I'm not sure if that's
still the case.
|
|
| Thanks,

| If you want to get close or distant cousins DNA tested to
verify
| that your lineage is correct and doesn't contain a non-paternal
| event, now would be a great time to do that. The Combined
| Y-DNA37+mtDNA test is a fantastic bargain for a short period of
| time.
|
|
| We know that mutations do take place, and there are
illegitimate
| births, name changes, and adoptions. Having three or more
CARROLL
| men tested from different branches of the same older tree helps
| narrow down just WHERE these changes take place.
|
|
| Twelve alleles aren't enough. You can prove two men are NOT
| related if they match on only 5 of the first 12 markers, but
you
| can't prove they ARE related even if they match on all 12 of
the
| first 12 markers.
|
|
| Remember to get the much reduced price, the kit must be ordered
| through any project, not from the
www.FTDNA.com opening
website.
|
|
| Not much as been advertised about the use of mtDNA for testing
| the maternal lineage, because it has been more expensive and
the
| surname changes with each generation. As more locality
projects
| are begun, it will be used more.
