We have NO CLUE who Earl Clyde Carroll's parents are except listed on his marriage
licenses, his parents are listed as David or could be (written poorly) Dan'l
Anderson Carroll and Gretta May Ellsworth. He stated he was born in TN yet I find NO
David and Gretta on any of the census or any other paper trail and actually can not find
Earl Clyde Carroll except in the 1920 census living with a Charles Moon as a boarder. He
should have been on the 1910 and 1930 census as well. In my heart I feel this is him in
1920 with Charles Moon, listed as E. C. Carroll born in TN. Charles Moon lived in
Venandgo Co., PA. I tracked down Charles Moon's family and found he often took in
homeless people. No living descendants have a clue who E.C. Carroll was that lived with
Charles Moon. On the 1920 census he is listed as 18 so that would make him born circa
1902. On his marriage licenses he listed 1908 as his birth year. This could be because
his wife Mabel was begged by her family n!
ot to marry him because he was to old for her, and he was a mystery man and no one knew
anything about him. Mabel was not permitted to ask him questions about him or his life.
She did not know anyone in his family. And she never met anyone that knew him from his
past. Therefore his family was never notified when he got blood poisoning and died around
the age of 30, age depending on when he was born. I do know who his child was because
that is my father in law. I also know from Mabel his wife she had a baby die in TOTZ, KY.
WHAT I am looking for is our family Lineage. Anyone that knew him before he married
Mabel. Genealogy is the art of tracing one's family. Lineage is the art of adding
ancestors to ones family tree. THIS is what I am looking for. I am not even sure David
Anderson Carroll or Gretta May Ellsworth are his parents, as I find NO paper Trail. Paper
Trail is written proof and Verification the parents or any information is correct.
Certainly all I know!
about Earl Clyde Carroll does not make a family tree or a lin!
eage cha
rt or a family history. The only paper trail is this marriage licenses in which he could
have provided false information. I can not get out of the 1900's with the Carroll
Ancestry. I see no reason for you to attack me for my post. I spend several hours every
day helping people on their genealogy, answering questions on my local area, giving
lectures to scout troops, doing a historical slide show to schools, helping PBS do a
presentation on my town, volunteering as a research librarian at a local coal miners
museum, sitting on the board of directors at our local free library and spending countless
hours helping with fund raisers, volunteering at the historical society, giving tours to
visitors of our area, taking photographs of cemetery stones for people and have never
accepted a fee for any of it. It was asked on this site we introduce ourselves, this is
simply what I did. I introduced what Carroll I am stuck on. My mystery is Earl Clyde
Carroll. We simply know nothi!
ng about HIM, or who he really was. We are not sure of any of the information he provided
is correct. In my heart I feel eventually someone will recognize something from the
little we do know about him. He may have been orphaned at a young age and have one or
both of his parents names wrong. We simply have NO CLUE. I even pondered that he used a
false name, but his wife's cousin told me that back in 1950-1970 time frame in a coal
miners newsletter or magazine she seen an ad of someone looking for him. She showed Mabel
the ad and Mabel refused to reply. This gives me hope he was using his real name since
someone was looking for him using Earl Cldye Carroll as his name. I have tried
unsuccessfully to find this ad. Mabel did tell me she was scared of what I will find
when searching for information on him. Mabel told me the "law" was always
looking for him. He was a big time bootlegger and ran bootlegging runs from Pennsylvania
to Florida. I think when he died Mab!
el was glad and didn't look back until I married into the fami!
ly and s
tarted trying to trace the Carroll lineage. I even questioned if Mabel knew more and was
not telling me. I then got his death certificate and all the information Mabel provided
on the death certificate was wrong, proving to me that Mabel didn't know the correct
information. She listed his father as Ellsworth Carroll and mother unknown. I will have
his death certificate corrected when I can prove who his parents are. Consistently he
stated that he was born in TN. We do have two photos of him. Mabel could not afford a
cemetery stone when he first died and years later placed a stone in the cemetery. She had
the wrong death year put on the stone, and I never had the heart to tell her. Some
family is missing a Carroll family member born 1902-1908. He was probably the black
sheep of a family. I am certain his family never knew of his early death.

Carolyn,
What is it that you really want? I see all the many, many posts about Earl on Google, and
an entire history of your posts at GenForum about him. You seem to know all about him
already. You know all about he and Mable's dead children for instance, and his cause
of death from blood poisoning, his occupations as coal miner/bootlegger, etc. I am just
curious why I spent an afternoon looking up data you already have.
Eric
