A note of explanation....
The letter you just received from Mike was mailed Thursday, but was
hung at Rootsweb. I got it cleared this morning. Some of you already
got the letter on the CARROLL mail list... and even on this list as a
reply. HE didn't mail the letter twice.
This gives a good opportunity for me to suggest that you just mail a
letter to one mail list at a time. If you mail to more than one, and
a person uses "Reply All" to answer that letter, the letter will then
go to all the people who received the first letter - only the person
sending the second letter isn't a list member on the other mail lists.
Therefore the letter bounces. (I've done it many times, not knowing
the problem at Rootsweb) If you want the same information to go to
several mail lists, could you use "Copy" and "Paste" to put the same
information on mail addressed to each list? Then when people reply,
their mail will go to the list of which they are a member.
So, I suggest:
1. Send a letter to only one list at a time. Certainly you can send it
to other individuals who are not on that mail list.
2. Use "Reply" rather than "Reply All" when you answer. Then look and
be sure it is going only to those persons and list you want to receive
it.
3. Change the Subject line to correspond with the main idea of your
message. If you are giving a response to the original message, leave
it the same. If you are just hitting "Reply" as a convenience instead
of beginning a new message (as many seem to do), be sure to change the
subject line.
These are just suggestions - no rules here. I know some of you have
not been on a list before. Well, I haven't been a list administrator
before... so we will all learn together.
I dislike the term "List Administrator"! However, that word is better
than "List Owner" that was previously used. I think those terms came
about because originally a mail list was started and managed by an
individual. Gradually, because of expense and to provide uniformity,
the individuals allowed Rootsweb (funded by contributions) to become
the umbrella - now funded by
Ancestry.com, I believe. Anyway, I think
of myself more as a manager, not owner or administrator - but Rootsweb
says I am an administrator.
So be it I guess....

Subject: [CARROLL-DNA] [CARROLL] New Administrator for Mail list
: Lura:
:
: My Carroll line comes out of Liverpool, England and enters U.S.
through
: Maine and settles in Massachusetts about 1866. My Great Grandfather
was
: Frank Carroll and was a seaman. Since he left his family to become
a
: ship's cabin boy at age 7, we have no knowledge of relatives in
: England. We have assumed that his parents came from Ireland, but I
have
: found no proof. Since he was 6'4", it has been suggested that he
had
: Scottish blood (with the Danish influence), but I have met many tall
: Irishman recently. So Y-DNA is our only hope in breaking down the
: genealogy wall. My Family Tree DNA kit # is 31491. As of yet,
there
: have been no very close Y-DNA matches with other Carroll's. Yet,
what
: we have determined is that my Carroll line is not an adopted surname
and
: has the Y-DNA of the Carroll's. With the present Y-DNA kit
information
: available, there does appear to be a closer connection (within 300
: years) to Carroll's that settled in early America: Carolinas and
: Virginia. Since early settlers were mostly from Northern Ireland
and
: the close proximity to Liverpool, I at this point am looking at
County
: Down and County Antrim and possibly County Louth as the origination
of
: my Carroll line. Of the five Carroll septs, I am also assuming my
line
: is from the O'Carroll of Oriel in Ulster, descendent of Conn of the
: Hundred Battles. I do hope that more participants get involved in
the
: Y-DNA project to help narrow down the possibilities. With
increasing
: participation from a broad spectrum of Carroll's, genealogical
history
: of the Carroll septs will be better defined and history beyond the
paper
: trails will be gained for us all.
:
: Godspeed!
: Mike Carroll
