Hello All,
Last week, whilst at the National Archives in London, I came across an example of what
appears to be a variation of the Carroll surname. I was looking through the records of the
Co. Clare Militia, as my most distant known ancestor was born there, and found a Corporal
Christian Carroll on the pay roll early in 1817. In June of that year his name disappears
from the pay rolls, but a Corporal Christian Croll suddenly appears instead. The surname
appears a number of times clearly as Carroll before June and then the surname is clearly
Croll after that date, so there's no chance of it being a one-off spelling mistake. It
may be just coincidence, but it looks to me like this Christian Carroll changed his
surname to Croll. I know it's a separate surname in its own right, but I wonder if
there are any other Crolls out there who are really Carrolls?
Peter.
