Yesterday I mailed a letter to this mail list, and an hour later
I mailed a second letter. My second letter went through the
list, and my first one did not. I just now discovered why - I
mailed it with my alternate address which is not subscribed to
the list. I apologize that you got the second letter first.
Here is the first one to the list, but answering a letter from
Mike Carroll to the mail list... see it at the bottom.

Subject: DNA of Carroll's of Ely
Mike,
This mail list has been deadly quiet since you wrote the letter
below back in November. At that time you said you were working
on getting a donor for a DNA sample for the Carrolls of Ely. I
think that must be the sample for which I received notice today
of a 63/67 match with my cousin who is kit # 32061. It is the
only one I have seen posted recently at
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/carroll/default.aspx?section=yresults
I knew that Frederick James O'Carroll, who has claimed to
represent the Carrolls of Ely, had been ill since this summer and
have been going to
http://www.clancian-carroll.com/ to check on
his progress, but I missed seeing until today that he died on
January 11, 2010. I extend my sympathy to his family.
As time goes on, we will need to think more about how this DNA
compares and what it tells us. I tend to be a scientist more
than a historian. I think there is no question that this last
DNA sample added to our chart is from the same heritage as the
ones from Sampson/Duplin County, NC.
I'm sure all have noticed the ** indicating a NULL value at DYS
425 for the group Kevin is showing in orange on the chart he
maintains. When he gets this latest sample plotted, it will also
be in the orange section and indicate that NULL value at 425.
This is explained by FTDNA as being a location on the DNA strand
where there are no repetitions of the bases ATGC. Therefore they
could not record a numerical value.
There seems to be a cluster of men (of many surnames) who are in
the R1b1 Haplogroup and have that anomaly at DYS 425 who have
roots is Northeast Ireland. Our Sampson/Duplin County, NC
Carrolls may be in that group, although so far we have no real
proof of that other than the DNA. However, the DNA has good
matches with other surnames from that area. My Dad told me that
we were Scots-Irish, and I believe he was correct.
In time we may actually learn a little bit if we ALL keep working
hard!!

Good morning. I am working on getting a strong candidate to help
identify the Carroll's of Ely. Hopefully by the beginning of the
year we will have the results.
