Lura,
Just offer your man a stick of chewing gum, and then send that off with the
Y-DNA kit. (Just kidding).
Actually the origin of my Carroll family Y-DNA is still unknown, but the R1a
haplogroup is considered "Slavic". However, I am told that if your R1a
ancestor is from the British Isles, he most probably was Norse Viking,
settling in Scotland or the Shetland Islands over a thousand years ago.
Apparently some of the "Slavic" R1a people migrated from the southern
Ukraine to western Norway a very long time ago.

Eric,
I think that it is fantastic news that you have found another cousin.
I wonder if it was a surprise to him that your Carroll/Carrel line
came from the area of Germany rather than the British Isles?
Isn't this DNA game exciting? I wish I could excite my family enough
to get a man tested. I've been in the hospital 3 times this spring,
and it appears I may have to return the kit I ordered unused. I'm
still going to try, however, when I am back on my feet a little
better.

A Carroll cousin of mine has been found by Y-DNA testing. He took
part in the National Geographic Genographic Project, and elected to
have his Y-DNA results posted at the Carroll Family Y-DNA project at
FTDNA.
(Kit numbers coming from the Genographic Project will be coded with
the letter "N". In this case the kit number is N3016. Genographic
tests only the same 12 markers that FTDNA does on their first panel.)
Kit number N3016 had a 12/12 match with kit number 27123, and you can
see that both are R1a. I contacted the email address for the N3016
participant - and low and behold he is a previously unknown 1st
Carroll cousin. The ancestor-in-common was born in 1834.
So, the technology works. Anyone else have this experience yet? It's
quite exhilarating...
