At first this new test was open to only Admins; now it's open to
anyone who has a sample on file (previous participants can order now
from their FTDNA homepage); very soon it will be opened to new
customers. This will be a particularly good test for descendants of
orphans, adoptees, unwed mothers, or folks with recent brick walls -
none of these issues need be in the all-male or all-female lines, this
test works equally well for all ancestral lines.
And for a test that looks at thousands of markers, it's very cost
effective!
The DNA tools are getting better every year.

Thank you, Whit and Jim,
I suspect you are both correct.... that the female is the one
serving as contact person for the male being tested. That just
breaks from the pattern they have used before.
Hey, Kevin, are you out there somewhere? Did FTDNA send you more
material about the new Family Finder Test? If so, will you share
it with us please?
I've just read through all the material about this new autosomal
test I can find at FTDNA. It seems that right now one must be
invited to order the test. I know that invitation is being sent
to some of those who have already had the Y-DNA test. My guess
is that they want to build their database as they go, and perhaps
they must also expand their workforce to do the testing. (At
least one sector of the economy seems to be growing.)
Other men and women who wish to take the autosomal test can put
their names on the waiting list. By following all the links from
www.ftdna.com home page, you can find material that explains the
autosomal Family Finder test. I wish it did not cost so much.
Just when you think you are understanding genetics a little, here
comes a new learning curve! That's supposed to keep our brains
functioning longer they say.

| Dear Lura,
|
| You are right that females do not have Y DNA, so testing for it
won't give
| any results. It is quite possible that a female is responsible
for the
| account you mentioned (just as you are for some of your
cousins), and has
| put herself in the latest generation position, rather than her
brother, or
| father, or whoever she had tested. As long as the remaining
line is all
| male, it is okay. I'm not sure exactly how FTDNA is handling
the GEDCOMs
| for the different applications (mtDNA, Y, autosomal), so it is
possible that
| this GEDCOM is supposed to serve more than one purpose, and
just displays
| the male line, or the female line, or both, depending on the
kind of match
| that has been found.

|
| Today I observed something on my cousin's personal website at
| FTDNA that I don't understand, and I wanted to see if any of
you
| have noticed this.
|
|
| There is a man who matches my cousin Robert Carroll, as 23/25,
| 33/37, and 60/67. At each of those matches there is the little
| graphic on the right side to indicate a pedigree has been
posted.
|
|
| All three of those pedigrees begin exactly the same way. The
| first person is shown on the left in green, and the given name
is
| "Peggy Ann ____". From there the lineage continues upward to
the
| father (shown in blue) and then the usual upward paternal line.
|
|
| HOW can that be possible??
|
|
| A male carries the Y-DNA of his father and the mtDNA of his
| mother, but a female carries only the mtDNA of her mother,
| doesn't she? I thought a female could not take the Y-DNA test
to
| determine the paternal line. I know a lot of women who would
| have been tested long before now if that were possible.
|
|
| I know FTDNA is beginning a new Family Finder program. Does
| anyone know if testing a female for Y-DNA is part of that new
| testing program?
|
|
| I'm sure some of you are much more aware of what FTDNA can do
| than I am.
