Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
This will be a duplicate letter for most of you, but there are a few

Subject: Carrolls in western Virginia
:
: On October 29, 2007 I posted on the CARROLL Rootsweb message board
: information about a book which has recently been placed online by
: Rootsweb. It might have information about your CARROLL ancestors if
: they lived in the western part of Virgina. I think part of that
area
: might now be a part of WV. My message did not come through the mail
: list, probably because it exceeded the size limit for what can come
: the mail servers at Rootsweb.
:
: Rather than shorten the message, I decided to just post here the URL
: for the Rootsweb message board where I put the message.
:
:
: The "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia" was
: extracted from the Original Court Records of Augusta County
1745-1800
: by Lyman Chalkley. (Augusta County was a vast area at that time.)
: This was originally published by Mary S. Lockwood in 1912 and
: reprinted by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. Baltimore, 1965,
1966,
: and 1974. Library of Congress Catalogue Card Number 65-15351,
: International Standard Book Number 0-8063-0069-8.
:
: In the message board posting I gave the names and page numbers for
not
: only Carrolls but some of the other soundex code names for C640.
:
: Hope some of you find your ancestor.

As you may have read or heard by now, there was a genetic conference
in Houston which ended a few days ago. FTDNA announced that they will
be beginning over the next few months some extension of their
databases and more databases based on some of the knowledge already
acquired. Did you know that you fellows are not only learning about
the past, but you are also helping plot the future of genetic testing?
Your descendants may some day say, "My gggrandpa was one of the first
to take the Y-DNA test." (Well, one of the first 100,000 anyway.)
I have now learned that Dr. Charles Kerchner has a Project
specifically for the study of the NULL value at DYS 425 which I told
you about a few days ago that our four Sampson County, NC men have.
In order to be in the project, a person had to have a 0 or NULL value
at DYS 425 and had to take a specialized test called DYF371X. I have
ordered that test for my cousin Robert Carroll # 32061 and made
application to be in that project. I don't know that this is going to
be of value to my cousin or me, but it should help refine the
information about 0 or NULL values appearing in a person's haploTYPE
(profile).
If you are more interested in that project, you can read about it at
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/null425/
For a good place to bookmark for better understanding of genetic
genealogy, Dr. Kerchner has provided a one-stop resource at
http://www.kerchner.com:80/dna-info.htm
I refer often to the glossary on the second line of that page.
I just wanted to give you this information as a follow-up on my
previous letter. I think CARROLL men who test in the future and have
a NULL value at DYS 425 will be able to easily identify to which
family they belong. Has anyone else had a 0 to show in a profile,
either in the CARROLL project or in another project?

Yes
I have upgraded to the 67 marker test but I still don't seem to match any Carroll's closely. Paul Burns and I are the closest match I have found with a genetic distance of 1 at 37 markers. My family came into Kentucky from Virginia in the 1830's and were in Virginia in the late 1700's. I haven't been able to trace them past that which is the reason that I took the dna test's to start with.

I thought you would be interested to know that I wrote to a gentleman
in England last night who had written to me the following.
***
"My family has lived in Kilkenny, Ireland for as long as records go
back. I am quite willing to provide a DNA sample should this be of any
help."
***
Of course I told him that we would be delighted to have him send a DNA
sample to be tested. Kilkenny is in Southeastern Ireland and lies to
the east of the southern portion of Tipperary.
There is a possibility some of us will find a DNA match and know where
our Carroll ancestors had lived a few centuries ago!!! There will
still be a genealogy route needed to plot the path backwards.
Now if we can just find someone from Northeastern, Ireland....
Some known male descendant of Charles Carroll of Carrollton....
Some known male member of the immediate family of each of the men who
are now recognized as Irish Chieftains of any Clan said to represent
those who now are called CARROLL.......
In genealogy there are always more questions each time you find an
answer and always more roots to dig.....

Lura,
Dear Woman,
You are almost making me wish I was Irish!
But alas, my Carrolls mismatch yours by 31 out of 37 Y-DNA markers... LOL
BUT, that is only the straight male surname line. My mother was a Carroll.
I have several red-headed Scots women as great great grandmothers.
You are doing a marvelous job!!!
