Hi,
I have no location for Emma's birth, just New York. The directory listings you found
are the ones I have. I haven't seen the actual State Census. And I only have a death
notice, written up by most likely Mary Ann daughter from MI to go by for Mary Ann's
first husband being H. Cary. In the State Census does it say where William Cary was born?
All census records for Emma state that her father was born in OH. One of the census
records for Mary Ann has her father from Canada, and the John Carrol I found in Canton in
1850 is from Canada. Now, Emma's first child was a boy and he was named Harry Andrew.
I know that Andrew is the paternal fathers name, so, I am thinking that possibly Harry is
Emma's fathers name (H for Harry......). One of the daughters is named Mary Elizabeth
(my grandmother). In this case, Elizabeth is the paternal mothers name and we know that
Mary is Emma's mothers name.
I guess I am just going to have to fan out from Watertown and see if I can find any parish
records (on local levels) for the 1850's and just keep trying to find a record of a
birth for Emma or a marriage for Mary Ann. I only have the obit for any name information,
and although obits can be a wealth of information, they can also be very inaccurate. The
same daughter gave the information for Mary Ann's death certificate as well as the
obits. I would feel a bit more comfortable if more than one of her kids had been involved
with the information. One of Mary Ann's kids death certificate was filled out by my
grandfather (go figure) and there were so many things he got wrong. But he did have Mary
Ann's place of birth as Watertown.
I have been working on this mystery for years. It was only in the last year that the
newspaper obit became available and I actually found out when and where Mary Ann died.
And this mystery concerning Henry C. M. Burgess came to light. I thought that piece of
information might finally be my big breakthrough. So, as more things become available I
might have a chance of finding out something new.
Thanks for your help, you have given me a few things to think about. One being, I have
never gotten any funeral home records for my grandmother. I have her death certificate
which tells me ZERO! I'm lucky it has her cause of death (long frustrating story).
But as I am typing here it occurred to me maybe the funeral home has more information.
That gets checked out next week.
Sharon
