Thanks to Brad Carrington, head of microforms, at UK for updating this
narrative about the fantastic holdings at UK.
KENTUCKY NEWSPAPER PROJECT
BY ROSEANN R. HOGAN
The University library began filming papers in the 1950s and
as a result had a collection of over 8,000 reels of papers dating
from the 1780s to the present. The University continues to
subscribe and film regional/local weekly and dailies.
In addition to these holdings, the Unviersity has become
involved in a project with the Natl Endowment for Humanities to
develop a union list of all KY papers and all papers held by
Kentucky libraries. Approximately fourteen thousand
titles have been identified.
These films may be borrowed from UK through Interlibrary loan
and are cataloged in OCLC. This means your local librarian
can access the database, identify film you want to view
and place an order to borrow the films. CONTACT YOUR LOCAL
LIBRARIAN, NOT UK, TO ARRANGE THE LOAN. Most Kentucky and
usually all academic libraries may borrow the films free through
ILL. Other libraries will be charged $10 per loan.
So it's best to go through an academic library.
A set of the fiche which contains the union list of all papers
in the project may be purchased from the UK Library for $5
as of 3/98. Send the request to Mr. Brad Carrington
Ky Newpaper Project, King Library, University of Kentucky,
Lexington, KY 40506
For people who already had a copy of this fiche before, no changes
have been made since the 1995 edition.
Finally, Kentucky is not alone in the project, so check with
your local libraries to see if your state has a similar project.
