James Carrington b 1796 and wife Elizabeth b 1807 left Roane Co ca 1852 by
flatboat traveling down the TN River. They were with other family and
friends. I know that a married son and the related Gilbert and Renfro
families stopped at Decatur Co and continued to live there. A married
daughter ( Woods ) and her husband got off at Humphreys Co. I know that on
the way, they were stopped at the Muscle shoals ( I assume AL ) before they
could continue. Some of the party continued on to Camden Co MO near Lynn
creek on the Osage River and others go to Warren Co IL. Some families they
traveled with were Miller, Roberts, Stegall, and Forrister.
My problem is that James, Elizabeth and children Winnifred (1829), William
(1831), Margaret (1836), James E (1837), Malinda (1841), Rachel (1844),
Thomas (1846), and Tennessee(1849) have disappeared!
I guess they could have gotten off in AL or anywhere along TN river to IL and
MO. With young children it must have been an interesting trip!
Perhaps they drowned or died from illness along the way and some of the
children were taken in by others-not the TN relatives however.
If you have a strange Carrington in any of these vicinities who is correct
age and name, please e-mail. This is a 10 year puzzle. Until the discovery of
a letter a few days ago, I didn't know about the mass exodus only that I
couldn't find them in Roane Co.
Thanks
