Among ALFRED and SARAH "SALLIE" (HALL) CARRINGTON'S children were two
daughters, MARTHA L. "MATTIE" CARRINGTON (b May 11, 1835) and JANE FRANCES
CARRINGTON (b Nov 3, 1830). The two girls married Knox brothers of nearby Fayette County,
TN.
Martha (my great grandmother) md John A. Knox in Marshall County, MS Jan 25, 1853. The
couple moved to AR before 1860. Martha died May 26, 1872 and is buried in The Graves
Cemetery in Howard County, AR.
Jane Frances Carrington md John A. Knox's brother, James H. Knox, on Nov 30, 1830 in
Marshall County. She died April 17, 1847 and is buried in the Carrington Cemetery in
Marshall County, MS.
SARAH "SALLIE" HALL CARRINGTON married William Therrell on May 15, 1848 in
Marshall County after her first husband, ALFRED CARRINGTON, died abt1846. Sarah died in
1867 and is buried in the Carrington Cemetery in Marshall County, MS.
Here is an obituary for Sarah:
Died in Marshall County, Miss. on the 14th of October, 1867, Mrs. [p.23] Sarah Therrell,
aged 66 years, 8 months and 14 days.... the daughter of Robert Hall of Orange County, N.
C. First married to Mr. Alfred Carrington, with whom she removed in 1831 to western
Tennessee, and thence in 1833 to the neighborhood where she [died] .... [Following the
death of her husband] she was some time afterward married to Mr. Wm. Therrell. Soon after
this event she connected herself with the Associate Reformed church at Mt. Carmel ....[She
leaves] an aged husband, three children. (Source:
Ancestry.com Associate Reformed
Presbyterian Death & Marriage Notices Volume II: 1866-1888. Compiled by Lowry Ware
Scmar Columbia, South Carolina 1998. These notices, were taken from Associate Reformed
Presbyterian church records and newspapers.)
In the Marshall Co. MS Cemetery Book, page 98, Sarah is listed in the Carrington Cemetery
(T-2-S, R-4-W, Sec 27). She is incorrectly listed in the book as "Sarah T. Harrell
Carrington, formerly wife of Alfred Carrington, born Orange Co. NC, Jan 15, 1801-died Oct
1, 1867".
It is likely that Alfred Carrington is buried in the Carrington Cemetery although there
evidently is no marker there. (I am interested in knowing if anyone has a photo of that
Cemetery). The Carrington Cemetery is said to be located at Byhalia in Marshall County.
An 1895 map of the county shows Byhalia next to Victoria in Marshall County. If Alfred is
buried at Victoria as earlier stated on this LIST, it is likely that the Cemetery is the
Carrington Cemetery.
I have information on the descendants of Martha L. and Jane Frances Carrington who married
the Knox brothers. I am interested in communicating with the descendants of their
siblings.
