Some Carrington researchers are trying to determine the interest in
launching a DNA testing project for the CARRINGTON surname. The project
would use Y chromosome testing to determine the relationship between
CARRINGTON men. Since the Y chromosome is passed virtually unchanged from
father to son, only CARRINGTON males could be candidates for testing.
A review of services offered by several testing providers, plus personal
experience with Y-DNA projects for other surnames, suggests that the best
choice would be Family Tree DNA (FTDNA). Their Web site is
www.familytreedna.com. As a family project, we would have a substantial
discount from their regular test prices. FTDNA has a very informative FAQ
page on its web site, and it is fascinating reading.
This project is being considered because the lack of records has, for
decades, made identifying relationships between the various CARRINGTON
families of America very difficult, if not impossible. Many researchers have
not been able to connect to known CARRINGTON family lines in America, or to
prove descent from British/European families. No amount of research or
conjecture can remedy this lack of records, but DNA testing IS a remedy. By
building a database of DNA from various lines in America and Great
Britain/Europe, it would be possible to resolve many of these problems and
aid future generations of researchers.
To assist in the sharing of information among participants, and to inform
potential participants, a Web site and a RootsWeb mailing list would be
created.
If you are interested in participating in a CARRINGTON Y-DNA Project, please
post a response indicating your interest. Based on receipt of a reasonable
number of responses, we would then make the necessary arrangements to launch
a project within the next few months.
Thank you.
