I found this in the Virginia Heraldica, page 95, and thought I'd post it in the hope
that it will help someone else.
The VA Carringtons descend from a line from Cheshire England. The first in the U.S. was
Col. George Carrington, who settled at Boston Hill, Cumberland Co., VA. He was a son of
Dr. Paul Carrington of Barbados. He married at the age of 21, about 1732, to Anne Mayo,
daughter of William Mayo. They both died Feb. 1785 and had 11 children.
Their eighth child was Edward Carrington, born Feb. 11, 1748 and died Oct. 10, 1810, and
was a distinguished officer in the Revolutionary War. Edward married Elizabeth Jacquelyn
Ambler.
Another son was Judge Paul Carrington, a member of the Revolutionary Committee of Safety.
Another son, Henry E. Carrington, married Louisa, and had Col. Henry A. Carrington. Col.
Henry A. Carrington was born in Charlotte Co. on Sept. 13, 1832 His mother was a daughter
of Hon. William H. Cabell, Virginia's governor from 1805-1808. Col. Carrington was
elected clerk of the Circuit and County Courts of Charlotte in 1870 and remained county
clerk until his death in 1885. He was commissioned Lieut.-Col. of the 18th VA Infantry and
served in 29 battles. He was wounded three times and taken prisoner at Gettysburg. One of
his sons, John C. Carrington, was the county clerk for Charlotte.
