Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi again,
I know that there have been rumblings on some of the surname lists for a
list homepage. I'm all for it but right now I'm runnning a little behind. I
just volunteer to do a few Arkansas GenWeb pages so it will be a few weeks
before I could start working on a list page. I'd love to hear your ideas on
it. What would be helpful?
I've set up a system on my business home page that many of you have used to
subscribe and unsubscribe to the lists that I own. I thought that might be
helpful on each lists homepage. What do you think?

Hey guys,
We've added a bunch of new subscribers in the last few days so, that means
fresh leads!!! I know Roll Calls aren't very effective on other lists but I
believe they work very well on the surname lists soooooo, how about it.
Wanna find some new cousins? :)

>From an article titled "When CT Hanged Witches"
It is difficult to find family records of people hung for witchcraft and
it seems like some of the records have been concealed. In all, 33
persons are known to have been accused of witchcraft during the latter
half of the 17th century when the witchcraft delusion swept CT, 11 of
these believed to have been executed.
John Carrington, A Wethersfield carpenter, and his (second) wife, Joan,
were convicted of "familiarity with Satan and works above the course of
Nature" and were hanged at Hartford in 1651. Their executions were also
noted in Grant's diary. John settled in Wethersfield prior to 1643 and
his homestead was on the east side of Sandy Lane, just south of Thomas
Standish. It is likely that Carrington was of a somewhat lawless
nature, for in March 1648 he was fined 10 pounds for bartering a gun
with an Indian."
(This is from an article in CT Nutmegger and History of Wethersfield.)
Indictment: "John Carrington, thou art indicted by the name of John
Carrington of Wethersfield, carpenter, that not having the fear of God
before thine eyes thoe hast Intertained familiarity with Satan, the
great enemy of God and Mankind; and by his help ahs done works above the
course of nature for ? both according to the laws of God and the
established laws of this common wealth thou deservest to Dye. The Jury
finds this Inditem against John Carrington the 6th of March 1650-1. The
same court, time, and place, found an Indictment also agains Joanne
Carrington, wife of John Carrington, with the same verdict." March 1652
Court Record. There was presented to this court and inventory of John
Carrington's estate which is ordered to be filed but not recorded. The
estate presented being 23 pounds, and the debts specified therein owing
by the estate is summed up 13 pounds. (From History of Wethersfield.)
The execution of Carrington and his wife was the second known execution
for witchcraft in New England. They were indicted at a court held Feb.
20 1651, Gov. John Haynes and Edward Hopkins being present among other
magistrates. They were found guilty on March 6, 1651. Both were
executed. (This from "Withcraft Delusion".)
Note:
There is a Nathaniel Carrington, who died 20 March, 1807. He is the son
of John Carrington. John Carrington married (1) Deborah Hunn 1729 and
(2) Thankful Hayford. Nathaniel "probably" is from the marriage with
Deborah Hunn, but I don't have many of the children's birth dates, so I
can't be sure. John Carrington was b/ca/1708, son of Clark Carrington,
b/ca/1678 and Sarah Higginson. Clark d/1745. Clark was the son of John
Carrington and (?). John was b/ca/1645 and d/1690. John was the son of
John Carrington and either his first wife, Mary, or second wife, Joan.
He was b/1602. He came to America with first wife Mary. In 1651 John
and his second wife were tried, convicted, and hung as witches in New
Haven, CT. This was more than 40 years before the Salem, MA witchcraft
trials. --Sandy--(I do not
have her address!)

Good Evening to all...
Since we now have the new West Indies Surname List up, thought that I
would share a few tidbits from my files.
>From the book Generations of VA Families:
Mt Peyton R. Carrington, of Richmond, writes an interesting letter
concerning the Carrington family. He quotes from a letter of Mrs.
Elizabveth Carrington of Buckinghamshire, England, 18 July, 1868: "I
was perfectly aware of the connection between your branch of the
Carrington family, that is if you are descended from the George
Carrington, son of Mr. Paul Carrington, who went to America. He is put
down in our record as having emigrated * * " (exactly as it is on the
copy) The granddaughter of George, the emigrant, Miss Eliza G.
Carrington, daughter of his youngest son, Major Mayo Carrington was
alive in 1868, and remembered the crest of the family on some pewter
plate that she had brought from her old home, Boston Hill, Cumberland
Co., but she could not distinctly describe the crest.
The arms of the family of Mrs. Elizabeth Carrington of Buckinghamshire,
England are:
"Aron on a bend sa. three lozenges of the field. Crest---out of a ducal
coronet or a unicorn's head sa.
My note: for anyone interested....I have the Carrington Crest on my
family page....help yourself! It is the same one. URL:
http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Lofts/6964
go to the links section...you will see Carrington Domain II....go to
this link and it will be there!
Ann...and anyone else that does not have interenet access..let me know
if you are interested and I will send you a copy...snail mail.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To continue the story....
George Carrington came to VA in 1723, with the family of Joseph and
William Mayo. But it seems that long ere that time, Paul, his father,
had visited VA, as the following letters attest:
Barbados, April ye 15th 1703
Mr. Paul Carrington:
Sr we have ordered Capt. Hawkins to spply himselfe to you when he
arrives in Virginia. Wee desire that you would assist him in fraughting
ye sloop Back for the Island. If you cannot fraught her in five weeks'
Time at ffive pounds per Tunne then wee Desire you would send her for
Philadelphia to Mr Charles Sober. What ffraught shee makes to Virginia
wee Desire that you would Remitt in Tobacco, Pitch & Tare in ye Sloop.
If ye Sloop ffraught in Virginia, wee desire that you would put 50 Live
Hoggs on Board out of ye ffraught money. We leive it to yor managemt
not doubting but that you will do for us as if it were your own. Wee
wish you a Prosperous Voyage from yor

Around The Corner: By Henson Towne
Around the corner I have a friend,
In this great city that has no end,
Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,
And before I know it, a year is gone.
And I never see my old friends face,
For life is a swift and terrible race,
He knows I like him just as well,
As in the days when I rang his bell.
And he rang mine
If, we were younger then,
And now we are busy, tired men.
Tired of playing a foolish game,
Tired of trying to make a name.
"Tommorow" I say "I will call on Jim"
"Just to show that I'm thinking of him."
But tommorow comes and tommorow goes,
And distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner!- yet miles away,
"Here's a telegram sir, Jim died today."
And that's what we get and deserve in the end.
Around the corner, a vanished friend.
Remember to always say what you mean.
Don't be afraid to express yourself. Reach out and tell someone what
they mean to you. Beause when you decide that it is the right time, it
might be too late. Seize the day. Never have regrets.
And most importantly, stay close to your friends and family, for they
have helped make you the person that you are today. Tell this to
your friends. It could make a difference. The difference between doing
all that you can or having regrets which may stay with you forever.
Just my thoughts for the evening....hope that all is well with all of
you...wishing you a wonderful evening.
Rita

Hi,
I thought you'd like to know about what Rootsweb is doing and what all is
being discussed on the Listowner's List. (I know, it's a little redundant
that the listowner's also have their own list.)
The following is from Brian Leverich from Rootsweb and the spam is also
attached.

As many of you are aware, GENFORUM.COM spammed all the RootsWeb lists
tonight.
It killed our mail server, and judging by the e-mail we've received
it irritated a lot of folks.
Here's what we've done at RootsWeb:
We captured and killed as much of the spam as we could, and I'm
trying to bring the mail server back on line.
I've written to Cliff Shaw to tell him we'll be sending him a bill
for damages after we clean up the wreckage, and we expect him to pay
promptly.
I've also written to all the upstream providers of his Internet
connection, asking them to share a personal growth opportunity with
him.
What a sleaze. *sigh* -B

Hi guys,
As you've heard, Rootsweb lists have been hit again by a spammer. By the
way, a spammer is someone who sends unsolicited usually off topic mail to a
mailing list or directly your personal mail box. Last week, this list was
hit by the same printer company who shutdown Maiser. My opinion at that
time was to wait and see. Well, it's happening again to serveral lists that
I "own". I would like to know what you guys think of our options. After
all, these are really YOUR lists!
There are two possiblities. Do nothing to the list and hope that the
spamming doesn't become a real problem, or we can choose to "close" the
lists. Closing the list only means that non-subscribers will not be able to
post a message. But, the down side is that several big ISP's are bad about
chaning your mailing address and the software that runs the lists can't
catch it. This means that you may have problems posting to the list. The
main ISP who switches around a bit is ATT but several others do the same.
You may not even be aware of the problem until you try to post to the list.
So, I guess it just boils down to if you think this is a real problem or
not. We all get spam mail sent to our mailbox. Some folks are highly
offended by this practice, others find no problem with it. Personally, I've
got an unlimited account and tons of mail already coming in, so I just
delete it. I rarely even bother asking to be removed from the list because
usually this is just a ploy to verfiy the address is a working one.
I hate to make this a topic on the lists, unless you believe it is
beneficial to discuss, so, please just reply to my personal address with a
yes or no and which list you belong to. I'll tally the votes and let you
know by early next week. :)
Thanks guys!
Tracey

Hello to all....Tracey as far as I am concerned do what you want or need
to do. I will do what is the best for you and rootsweb....! This can
be worked out.
Rita Bryant
Hi Rita,
This actually looks like the right general time and place for my Charity
Carrington (b. 1730) who married Joseph Wells, Jr in Louden Co VA
(reported to Fairfax MM) in 1750, then moved to Orange Co, NC with her
husband; she died there in 1803. You did tell me you had a line there
if you could just dig it up! Do you (or anyone else out there on the
list) have anything else on John's parents or siblings? I do have lots
of information on Charity's offspring, which I would be delighted to
share. Hoping for a family for Charity....Thanks for your help, Mary
World's oldest person dies at 122
August 4, 1997
Web posted at: 9:47 a.m. EDT (1347 GMT)
ARLES, France (CNN) -- Jeanne
Calment, believed to be the world's
oldest person, died Monday at age 122,
according to her retirement home. No
precise cause of death was given for
Calment, who died in the retirement
home where she spent the last 12 years
of her life.
According to her birth certificate,
Calment was born on February 21, 1875,
about 10 years after U.S. President
Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.
She entered the Guinness Book of
Records in 1993 as the oldest living
person whose birthdate could be
authenticated by reliable records.
Over the years, she became the biggest
attraction in Arles since Vincent
Van Gogh's visit to the town in 1888.
She met Van Gogh as a girl, when
the artist came to shop at her father's
art supplies store, and remembered
him later as "dirty, badly dressed and
disagreeable."
She outlived her husband, Fernand
Calment, who died in 1942, four years
before their 50th wedding anniversary.
She also outlived her only child, a
daughter who died in 1934, and her only
grandson, a doctor who died in
1963.
She also outlived a lawyer who hoped to
take possession of her
apartment. She lived mostly off the
income from the apartment, which she
sold cheaply more than 30 years ago to
Andre-Francois Raffray with the
understanding that he would take
possession of it when she died.
He died more than a year ago at age 77
after paying $184,000, double the
apartment's market value, for the
property; his family was required to keep
making the payments.
Though blind, nearly deaf and in a
wheelchair, Calment remained spirited
and mentally sharp until the end.
That was clear to those who attended
her 121st birthday, when she
released her CD, "Time's Mistress,"
which featured her reminiscing to a
score of rap and other tunes.
At 85, she took up fencing lessons. At
100, she was still riding a bicycle.
And she when she finally gave up
smoking two years ago, her doctor
said she quit not for health reasons,
but because she could no longer see
well enough to light her cigarettes,
and didn't want to ask someone to do
it for her.
Calment credited her longevity to Port
wine, a diet rich in olive oil, and her
sense of humor. "I will die laughing,"
she predicted.
