Message Board Post:
Looking for any family members of these two parties. This has been my "brick
wall" in my research and just stumbled upon new information today that has brought my
research for the Gilbert family into the Langevin board! I am really excited and hoping to
find some living family members that can assist with finding where the family came from
and what became of the siblings of my Gilbert line. Here is what I have/know, and
hopefully someone can help me with the rest!
My Joseph D. Gilbert (this is my mother's great grandfather), was born in Canada on
April 3, 1855 to a Joseph Gilbert and an unknown mother (info taken from death
certificate).
Joseph D. Gilbert was widowed at the time of his death in August 1939. His wife's
name was listed on the death certificate as Matilda Langevin.
Joseph died on August 19, 1939 in Greenwich, CT (USA) and I have obtained a copy of his
obituary. It states that he was survived by 3 children. One son, John P. Gilbert (my
mother's grandfather), and two daughters, Mrs. Edlaw Carrigan and Miss Lillian Gilbert
who lived in New Hampshire and New York City respectively.
I was aware of a Lillian Gilbert, for she was listed on one the 1910 census info I had
found, but had no other information on her. I had no knowledge of another child, listed
here as Mrs. Edlaw Carrigan. I would like to find these two women (or their families,
children, etc) for they would have been born sometime between 1886-1900, and most likely
are no longer alive.
I have been unable to locate birth information on Lillian, or her brother, John P.
Gilbert, other than the date I have for John P. Gilbert of Feb. 2 1886 (or 1887 -
conflicting dates on different paperwork found). John may have been born in New Hampshire
or New York (or possibly even Canada), but we have been unable to find a birth recorded in
the known areas lived in.
My mother seems to recall that they were born in Laconia, NH, but they do not have the
record.
Looking at ancestry info, there is an Edlaw Carrigan's WW1 draft card, and it states
he lived in Laconia NH. He was a Laborer at J. L. Roberts Coal Yard at the time of this
registration.
It says he was born April 12 1896 in Laconia, NH.
Not sure if this is the correct Edlaw Carrington or not, but would like to find out if he
married a Miss Gilbert, whose first name remains unknown (not Lillian).
Anyone who can help or knows of this family, please contact me through the message boards
and put the surname in the subject line so it doesn't get deleted! Thanks!
I have reason to believe the "D" stands for Didace, for this name was used on a
census much later, but so was the name Frances, so I could be wrong!
