This pot hasn't been stirred in a while on this list...so here goes. I have a bunch of
Carrigan's in Maury Co., TN without documented ancestors. My gut tells me that they
all most likely come from the James and Jane (Sample) Carrigan union, but I simply cannot
prove it. I can't even connect them with certainty to the other Carrigan lines in
middle TN, or even with the Maury Co. borders. Some I can connect, but not all of
them.not MINE! He's odd man out!
Two valuable pieces of evidence exsist pertaining to James and Jane Carrigan: The Carrie
Carrigan Outhouse letters (dated 1886 and 1906), and Jane Sample Carrigan's 1853
Revolutionary War Pension Application.
From the 1853 Pension Application we learn the following:
1)
Connection of James Carrigan to Jane (Sample) Carrigan (applicant) by same marriage date
recorded in Orange Co., NC
2) Revolutionary war service of James Carrigan: Hillsboro, NC, 3rd Reg. Trousdale's
Co; served 3-5 mo. as lieutenant, and that term expired a few days before Charleston was
taken (12 May 1780). **Note that James and Jane were not married until 1786. Based on
1800-10 census data, marriage, birth date of older brother John, etc., his est DOB is ca.
1757-1765. He would have been aged 15-23 in 1780.
3) Migration from Orange Co., NC (married by Robert Mebane of Orange Co., NC) >
Guilford Co., NC (lived near Andrew Mills) > TN > Maury Co., TN (1853 Jane files
application)
4) Familial connection between either James or Jane and Robert Mebane of Orange Co., NC,
who claimed to have married the couple
5) The destruction by fire of the home of James and Jane Carrigan, sometime before the
death of James Carrigan in 1830.
6) That in 1806-07, the eldest son of James and Jane was 18 years of age, placing his DOB
ca 1788.
7) Residence in Guilford Co., NC for at least 20 years, living near Andrew Mills (later of
Maury Co., TN)
8) Acquaintaned with Shadrack Loftin of Maury Co., TN since ca 1794
9) James and Jane had 3-4 children by 1794
10) James Carrigan died 10 Oct 1830, location not noted, but assumed as TN
From the Carrie C. Outhouse letters we know the following:
1)
James Carrigan emigrated from Ireland with parents William and Elisabeth Carrigan in 1766
2) The James Carrigan that married Jane Sample 8 Apr 1786 in Orange Co., NC is the son of
William and Elizabeth (LNU) Carrigan, and therefore the brother of John Carrigan of IL
3) James Carrigan was a Revolutionary War veteran
4) James Carrigan moved from NC to Warren Co., TN where he used his Revolutionary War Land
Grant and that of his brother John.
5) James and Jane Sample Carrigan issued the following children in order: William (died a
bachelor), Elisabeth (married Shadrack Loftin), Mary (married James Mills), John Sample,
Milly. **Note that marriage records indicate "Polly" Carrigan married Shadrack
Loftin 3 Apr 1812, Guilford Co., NC. It is more likely that it was Mary "Polly"
rather than Elisabeth married Shadrack Loftin.
6) Son William "died a bachelor". It is my belief that this William did not
marry until late in life, and that the IL branch of the family may have had no contact
with individual. Also, he probably was not the eldest of their children.
7) Does not provide for one of the males b. 1790-1800 in the 1800 and one b. 1784-1794 in
the 1810. This child would have been born 1790-1794 if it represents the same individual.
When reviewing available census data for this family, one notes that they were in Guilford
Co., NC in 1800. This household contains 6 children as opposed to the five noted by
Cousin Carrie. This seems to indicate an error in the Carrie Outhouse accounting for this
family. The entry leaves room for 4 males: James (26-45), 1 male 16-20, 2 males under
10. The female 1800 count equals that of Cousin Carrie: Jane 26-45, 1 female 10-16, and 2
females under 10. Taking into account that in Guilford Co. in 1812, Polly Carrigan
marries Shadrack Loftin in April, and Sample Carrigan marries Catherine Lambeth in
October, it leads me to believe that this Sample was the issue of James and Jane as well.
And the missing male (b 1790-1800) from the 1800 census. It should be noted that Shadrack
Loftin and Catherine Lambeth were 1st cousins, making this pot even stickier.
So there. I've said it. I think Cousin Carrie Outhouse missed a child of James and
Jane when she wrote about them in her letters. She descended through the John and
Catherine (Sample) Carrigan line, and the name of "John Sample" Carrigan bore
prominence. I also think that she was incorrect in the mention that son William was the
first born son of James and Jane. I think he was their youngest son, born ca. 1798, and
that he married Lucrecia Lemasters later in life and settled in Cheatham Co., TN.
Anyone have any thoughts to share on this line?
